You know its interesting these manufactured bands, they can be celebrated (ie Sex Pistols) or derided (ie Monkees) but they all turn out influential and important in the end. The Runaways being no exception despite falling into the latter category.

The novelty idea of being a teenage all girl band is usually the thing that intrigues most but it is the music more so than the "jailbait on the run" image the girls had that is more interesting.

They were some what ground breaking as one of the first examples of punk/heavy metal crossover by way of straight rock n' roll with only contemparies Motorhead, The Dictators and the Ramones doing what they were doing. Quite a musical legacy really.

Anyway are there any other fans?

Heres a great clip of them performing 'Wasted' on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 sans Cherrie Currie. Totally disaffected and pissed.

I love the Runaways, they were an excellent band. Even though they were technically 'manufactured' most members had been playing similiar style material yonks before then in other bands.

Queens of Noise is a killer album that any hard rock/metal fan would be proud of owning.

My favorite is Waitin' For The Night. Not a dud on that one, methinks.

If you have Netflix, check out "Edgeplay". Its a documentary on the Runaways produced by Viki Blue. You can actually watch it on demand on the Netflix website. It doesn't include Joan Jett, but it was an enjoyable movie.

Musically speaking, I was/am more of a fan of Girl School, but the Runaways definatley owned them in the looks department. I have a few Joan Jett cd's that I break out from time to time. Joan was one of MetalBoy71's first crushes. Loved her in the black leather jacketand jet black hair in the "I Love Rock N Roll" video.

I like THE RUNAWAYS because i am a LITA FORD fan and after buying all the LITA FORD albums i started on THE RUNAWAYS. I have a couple of vinyls of this girls and they are good. Nice hard rock with some melodic parts and they were one of the first all female hard rock band. RESPECT!!!!

Great band form the 70's and as influential would be Suzi Quatro!

First heard them after becoming a fan of Joan Jett then Lita Ford. Really good stuff. Probably more likely today to break out The Runaways than I am the solo stuff from the other two.

The Runaways great band , and like Franstein's monster they rebelled agaisnt their creater Kim Fowley, and unlike other manufactured bands theses girls from day one tried to write their own material. They may have been put together and selected by Kim Fowley but you can't manufacture chemistry which these girls ( they were teenagers at the time) had and their attitude was completely real, cool band who would not get their due til years after their demise, and I like both with Cherie Curie as frontwoman and Joan Jett, but I have give an edge to " Waiting for The Night', which has Lita Ford's silliest song " Trashcan Murders"

Here's some Runaways news regarding a biopic I didnot even know was being made:

Twilight actress Kristen Stewart is set to make the jump from emo vampires to punk rockers after being cast as Joan Jett in the upcoming Runaways biopic. The film, called simply The Runaways, will be written and directed by music video vet Floria Sigismondi (Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People,” the White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid”). The biopic will focus on the band’s “meteoric rise as teenagers to their dissolution and disillusionment.” Additional casting for the roles of keyboardist Cherie Currie and guitarist Lita Ford has not been announced yet. The Runaways are generally regarded as the first all-girl rock band and stayed together for roughly four years. Jett went on to have an even more successful solo career. Though the casting of Stewart as Jett bothers us a lot less than having Kirsten Dunst play Debbie Harry, is she T-U-F-F enough to fill Jett’s leather boots?

From what I've seen so far she's a pretty good actress for as young as she is (17). An interesting idea for a movie, I'll look forward to seeing this one.

I'm no authority on The Runaways. I know the basics but is their anything in their brief musical history that warrants a movie? They weren't exactly Motley Crue, were they? Heck, if they're gonna write in some hot love scenes between Joan & Lita, I'm all for it, but aren't there other bands out there that have a more interesting story than the Runaways? Maybe I'm wrong? Anyone have some cool Runaways stories they'd like to share?

MG,

Watch the documentary "Edgeplay". It doesn't have Joan's side of the story, but it's pretty interesting. Much more interesting than a movie about the sexual escapades of Motley Crue.

The Runaways weren't as bad as Motley Crue but there was some debauchary involved, alot of drama caused by their manager Kim Fowley, drug use galore, and of course a brief fling between original vocalist Cherie Curie and Joan Jett. There is a documentary directed by one of their bassist Vickie Blue called Edgeplay which is not to bad, Joan Jett refused to coporate but the rest of the band did, including manager kim Fowley it is worth checking out.

Now that sounds more interesting than a direct-to-dvd movie with the current flavor-of-the-day actress. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks guys.

I actually Motley Crue but, maybe this being mean since I am somewhat of a fan, but I always find thoses guys to come off as stupid and shallow, anybody read their stupid book " The Dirt'. I have feeling most of those stories are bullsh!t, like that high school jock who bragged how many chicks he bagged, when in reality he was only hanging with Rosy Palm.

Agreed. I like Motley too, but they believe their own manufactured image a bit too much.
