I know there are always discussions about who should be placed where. There was a show on late one night that for all intents and purposes was a study in Heavy Metal Anthropology. This was the family tree that they constructed. Of course not every band will be on here, but it does address the bigger bands out there.

The one in the movie Metal: A Headbanger's Journey was the best I have seen.

I thought it was cool and interesting, and Van Halen may not really be a pop metal but certainly influenced every hair/pop metal band that came out of L.A. in the 80's

Poison, while it has glam elements, should be under pop metal, and Queen is nowhere to be found.

Yeah, the power metal bulk is totally off!

And since when is Norwegian Black Metal and Swedish Death Metal separate genres, outside regular black metal and death metal?

JUDAS PRIEST and SCORPIONS are two bands that have heavily influenced Power Metal, the way BLACK SABBATH has influenced Doom Metal...but SABBATH isn't Doom and PRIEST/SCORPS aren't Power Metal...

Speaking of Doom Metal, where was it? CANDLEMASS isn't Stoner Metal...

I got nuthin' to say... I'm not a genre fiend... Laughing My "Metal Geneaology" chart would have two sides: "Stuff that's Good" and "Stuff that Sucks."

I am not a genre fiend either, I either like it or I don't. Plus when I was younger because I liked both Venom, Quiet Riot, and Led Zeppelin, I would be given crap for not liking only one specific sub genre.

I also find it incredible that some guy out there created a metal genealogy tree, and he is not the only one. I wouldn't even know where to begin or what band would fit under what sub genre.

My reaction to it was: Wow, you at least would think he would spell "Hardcore" right. Smile But I'm an ass like that.

I appreciate his time in creating it, but there are some bands that can go in several sub genres. That genre subject is a hot topic.

True, I saw in a thread that ULT mentioned how Aerosmith for example were classified as a heavy metal band in the 70's and 80's, and a few people took issue with this. I happen to agree with ULT, but we are around the same age, so since we grew up with alot of bands that were classified as metal that may not be necessary considered metal if they had released their debut in the last few years as opposed to it being released in 1973.

Also, Suicidal Tendencies metalcore? It was referred to as crossover.

I agree bro. That whole list is such a matter of opinion and so many great bands are left off of those lists. There is not one person on planet earth who can totally and completely nail the "perfect list" of metal geneology. until that day comes, some of us will continue to enjoy our favorite rock/metal and some of us will argue about it til the sun burns out.

Aside from what band belong under what genre, this genealogy could become overloaded on info, for example how far would you want to trace the birth of metal? Do you start with bluesman Robert Johnson and Chicago bluemen like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, or do you move forward to Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis or even further up to the Yardbirds and The Kinks which we could directly draw a direct link to heavier bands that followed, just something to ponder.
