| MC666 siad this can make or break a band for him. Same here. If I don't like the vocals, there is no chance I will listen to the band. Bas vox, bad band, imo.

| Same for me. I can't tell you how many times a band has sounded great to me until the singer opens his mouth and ruins the whole damn thing.

| There are a few bands that break one of my sacred rules and that is you need a good singer to be a good band imo. I love the vocals and thats what makes or breaks a band for me. Some of the exceptions are
Dew Scented - Leif Jensen has those vocals that go right through me but the thrash music is awesome and makes up for it.
A lot of Melodic Death Metal bands would be awesome imo with a stellar or even average singer.

| With very few exceptions, the answer is no. Especially growling/screaming.
I still like some bands with growlers like
Epica
Haggard
Hollenthon
Sirenia
But that's about it. And lately, the stereotypical shrieking male metal singer has really grated on my nerves too.

| The vocals ruin a lot of bands for me. Opeth would be brilliant if they
had a vocalist I liked. I ultimately got rid of Mastedon for the same
reason. They final verdict is still out on Kreator, but I think it will
be a keeper. |

| Yes, ruin. However, it's funny what I'll consider a good vocalist. Rarely it seems that a vocalist is a perfect fit for a particular band. This is some sort of psychological thing, I'm sure, but it works for me!

I didn't even talk about my own band. Other people may have but I didn't. I was secretly talking about ICED EARTH! People wanna have debates about which singer was better Owens or Barlow and no one seems to care that their guitar riffs are about as average as they come.

Jon Schaffer is one of the best rhythm guitarists there is imo. His downstroking picking technique is nasty. Listen to the riff in The Coming Curse and see what i mean. I agree that he uses the same basis on most of there songs but the songs dont sound the same.

| check out Sacred Steel for decent music with absolutely atrocious vocals. i cannot stand to play the discs because of the vox. i used to have the same problem with Ultimatum (although not quite as bad), up until the last album where the vocals improved tenfold.

No offense to a certain person, but that's been my problem with that band too.
Then again, I don't much care for most thrash vocals in general. Therefore, I never gave Into The Pit a shot because I figured it would be more of the same vocal style.
Maybe I need to check it out?

The funny thing is, everyone's definition of "horrible" is different.
Take Bon Scott for instance. The really does not have a musical voice but I love him anyway. Then there's Dave Matthews. The guy can carry a tune but something about his voice just grates on my eardrums.
Kevin Kinney of Drivin' n Cryin' really has an atrocious voice (nasally, off key) but I love that band. Jon Bon Jovi can sing but other than Lost Highway, I can't stand his voice.
Go figure.

Sacred Steel is the perfect example and who I was actually thinking of when I mentioned that bad vocals ruin things for me, but sometimes an unusual vocalist fits perfectly to a particular band/style. I LOVE this guys' vocals.

I've never heard Sacred Steel but I remember reading a review of one of their albums where the writer compared the vocalist to Alvin (of the Chipmunks) and said the disc sounded like a "Chipmunk Metal" CD.  That in and of itself was enough to make me decide to avoid them.
