Yep! They impressed me when I saw them live!!!! The show I saw was Winger/Extreme/Tangier (remeber them?)

Yea, I remember Tangier. I saw'em open for Extreme too (no Winger @ that gig tho -- the third band on the bill I saw was Valentine). Tangier sounded pretty good live but I bought their then-current STRANDED album after that gig and thought it was kinda lame. Like Winger, another band that I found to be better live than on record. Oh well.

Well, there's your trouble. Everyone knows that Peruvian "marching powder" is superior to the Columbian stuff. Laughing

To imply that good musicians playing Melodic Rock are "slumming", as in "playing below their means for money" is music snobbery. Implying that playing a certain style of music is somehow inferior based on how hard it is to play is music snobbery. I should know, I used to say the same thing. I just read what was said.

I thought the allegation is that they were chasing the bucks by playing this style ... which I think is true. Sure, they may enjoy it to a certain extent, but when the styles change then it's amazing how quickly their "tastes" just happen to coincide ...

Quote:
I never said that. What I said was it takes just as much talent to write GOOD Melodic Rock as it does GOOD Thrash...I made no mention on how hard something was to play.

Gotcha.

Quote:
I'm not quite sold on Kip's brilliance as a songwriter and arranger but those guys can certainly play as well as pretty much any rock band.

Quote:
If you ever get in the mood, check out Kip's solo stuff

I'm never in that mood.

Quote:

...sort of like a Melodic Rock version of Peter Gabriel...moody, layered & very musical. For the record, not that it really matters,

I'm not into PG at all really.

Quote:
Kip Winger is a classically trained composer.

That means nothing. I've heard his many attempts at writing hard rock songs which was his primary trade so I'm not too enthused about looking further.

Quote:
Well, if you remember, those hair bands talked about growing up fans of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, etc...but not all of them sounded like it. I can say from experience that, as much as I love Melodic Rock, I don't necessarily want to play it all the time and make it the only thing I do.

I'm not criticizing bands for changing styles ... but it is obvious that almost all of them changed styles to the one that they though could earn them the most $$$$.

Quote:
Me going from K-Octave to Line Of Fire wasn't selling out, it was branching out...nothing wrong with that...just not everybody is going to like it.

Right ... because you're not gonna get airplay on radio and MTV by going AOR in the 2000s ... that's not even close to the situation these bands were in during the 80s and 90s.

Just pulled this site up just as Down Incognito queued up on my mp3 player. How very random ideed. 1977 songs to choose from, and a Winger song pops up.

When did Winger do a major shift in style? And even if bands did and do, often the label tells them too or no money and no album release. If it's your job you probably will try it.

As for the new album, one full listen and it's very good. Not sure if it's Pull level but it'll be close.

Never really...they've always retained their core sound while trying different things...even the first 2 albums are different from each other in places...

They went from "suck" to "blow". Not a major shift, but noticable nonetheless.

If I told the truth about what I really think about Winger, I'm afraid I'd be banished to the time-out room.

So I picked up THE VERY BEST OF WINGER last week from the five-dollar CD bin at Walmart. As I said earlier in this thread, the band had a couple of songs I dug here and there but never enough to get me to buy a full album. Well, all the songs I liked are here on this disc, so I was like "woohoo, cheap shortcut!!!"

I gotta say though, the track listing on this disc is totally ass-backwards. I realize that Kip is particularly proud of Winger's PULL album, which I understand is his favorite Winger album, but that disc sold approximately a dozen copies when it first came out in '93. Therefore, starting off this "best-of" with a half dozen songs from PULL and then burying the "hits" at the ass end of the running order seems a little strange. The first song I knew ("Can't Get Enuff") doesn't even come in till track #7.
Some of the PULL tracks are decent, don't get me wrong, I just thought it was an odd way to set this collection up. I would've put the tracks in chronological order, but obviously Kip chose not to ask me for my input on this project.

I'm a big fan of Winger.

Probably because I'm a sucker for hooks.

Winger are great. Only have their first two, but they're both pretty good albums imo.

Their third album, "Pull" is every bit as strong as those first two.

Could anyone post a few songs from Kip Winger's solo career, please?

I agree. It is a very very good album.
