VENGEANCE RISING Released upon the earth 1992
Roger Martinez-vocals, lead and rhythm and bass guitars Johnny Vasquez-drums Jamie Mitchell-lead guitars Simon Dawg(George Ochoa)-rhythm guitars Joe "manic" monsorb'nik(Victor Macias)-Bass guitars
1.Help Me 2.The damnation of judas and the salvation of the thief 3.Released upon the earth 4.Human dark potential 5.Instruments of death 6.Lest you be judged 7.out of bounds 8.Bishop of souls 9.Tion 10.You will be hated
For the very last VR album Roger manages to scrape together another batch of thrashers to crank out 10 more songs to fulfill the original Intense records deal. Roger always liked to consider VR as grindcore and related Vengeance to Napalm death and Godflesh very frequently...heck man, a vid for the destruction comes album even appeared on the grindcore edition of Hard n heavy at one point. Well, I think this record is the closest to that kind of sound that Vengeance ever had. Roger experimnts with some heavy duty death growls, but also mixes in the same unique yelp from before. Guitars have that distinct death buzz on certain songs....etc. Following the Destruction comes tour, Roger hired all new musicians for this record including Jimmy P. Brown and George ochoa of Deliverance and Victor Macias of Tourniquet(both under pseudonames). Also Jamie Mitchell who was from the christian themed punk band scaterd few covers lead guitars on a few tracks. This is my least favorate VR album, but thats not to say that this disc shreds. The first time I heard "help me" I was ultra chilled, just like the end of beheaded from Human sacrifice.
As most know, after this record alot of drastic happenings occured, I didnt really want to go into the details when I started this complete works as the info is fairly well documented, but while I'm typing this I figured I would just give a brief summary without most of the drama involved....
Inbetween the recording process of Once dead and Destruction comes, Roger flew over to Australia to help with the producing work on Mortifications Break the curse album. When he came back to the states to finish the Once dead tour, the band realized that they were not making the profit off merch, etc that they were hoping and needless to say the Once dead tour turned out to be a bit of a flop. Following this, the other members of VR including Larry farkas, Doug Thieme, Roger Dale Martin, and Glenn Mancaruso made a decision to hand over everything rights-wise to Roger Martinez and to form their new band, Die Happy. Roger Agreed and accepted the responsibility to finish Intenses contract of a 4 album quoto. Roger I think had strong desire to finish what he helped start with VR, but took on WAY to much, and I believe this wore him down to a point where he couldnt take it anymore and had a mental breakdown resulting in him turning his back on most of his friends like Steve Rowe, Sanctuary church, his own wife Ruby....etc.
All the intrique aside, VR will always be a very historic band and can be argued that they helped metal within the christian circles become widespread and acceptable with the general metal scene just like what Petra, Stryper, and Rez band did before them. VR just took the Rad thrash approach. |
Simon Dawg was Jimmy Brown, not George Ochoa. |

Two separate bands. |
I agree with biddle. The 2004 show was indeed the Vengeance Rising reunion show. It was suppose to be a one off show. Roger was originally invited to sing, but he declined. When he did, I was asked to take the slot, which I gladly did. Still have the original set list from that show with the Vengeance logo on the top. Name was changed at the last minute out of respect to Roger. It was a great honor for me.
Regardless of whether Roger was there, it was great to see Larry Farkas on stage doing Into the Abyss again! Man what a rush! _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

Just to be picky, Roger helped Mortification with their S/T album. Break the Curse had already been released in 1990 under the Lightforce name, and the band toured with Roger as Lightforce in early 1991: http://www.firestreamvault.com/main/rateimages/204_03_14_2010_12_25_28_lightforcetourlarge.JPG |

| Early Vengeance should of been considered one of thrash's elites at the time, but they were robbed of the deserved respect because they were Christian |

| Once Dead- Return with a vengeance(2005) DVD Scott Waters-vocals Larry Farkas-guitars Doug Thieme-guitars Roger Dale Martin-bass Glenn Mancaruso-drums Whats the next best thing to seeing Vengeance rising live?....Seeing the original lineup of VR with Ultimatum vocalist Scott Waters! This show was a major deal for alot of hardcore VR fans in 2004 and this DVD captures all the excitement of this legendary comeback of a classic band. Although Roger isnt on vocals, I think Scott does a pretty killer job on this...in my opinion his voice sounds a little strained here and there but Ultimatum also played this night so that is understandable considering the wear n tear on the pipes. The whole band plays great for being out of the picture for a good 20 years and despite alot of techno difficulties during the Once dead set the guys ruled. Scotts microphone goes south about 3/4ths of the way thru "into the abyss" and guitars cut in and out a few times...this all is adds to the rawness and makes you feel like your really there. The setlist is made up of all classic Vengeance rising tunes and even features a new song written called "Once dead" that has a rad groove sound and is added as a bonus track. Some awesome bonus features on the disc also including an interview with the dudes discussing other musical projects each member has been apart of outside and after Vengeance rising as well as details about the splitting of VR and Rogers departure. Some on set photos are included as well as discography bios for scott, larry, doug, roger, and glenn. After such a ripping performance I only wished that Once dead stayed with the original VR members and kept scott for vocals instead of the more "core" sounding dude that they have now. Oh well, atleast we will always have this badass DVD and the legacy of Vengeance rising. _________________ |

Actually, my voice was very strained at this show. I flew out to California a few days before the show. We did a couple practices and it sounded great. I felt great! The day of the show, I was scheduled to have an AM practice with the whole band, including Roger Dale who had not yet practiced with the band. After practice we had interviews with for the DVD, a lunch with all the band members and crew, then it was off to the show where I had a set with Ultimatum and Once Dead. Well, wouldn't you know, I WOKE UP SICK! UGH! Once on stage I was bursting with energy, despite a slightly sore throat. I can honestly say that God granted me the voice to get through that set because shortly after Once Dead left the stage after the final encore, my voice was gone. As many shows as I have done over the years, I have never lost my voice, even when doing more than one show on a day. Listening back to the DVD now I can hear a bit of strain in my vocals, but despite that, I like the otherwise raw, live delivery I gave for that show. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!
