PostSubject: DB's Art Corner   Thu Dec 17, 2009 1:48 am

I have become very satisified with my abiltiy to copy certain drawings. Normally I'd post drawings in the deviant art website but I'm not sure if there would be any copyright disputes despite giving credit to the origional artists. Also it seems I can't get any comments on some of my drawings on that website (I get better responses from my fellow HoM members) due to the large number of proffessional artists on there. The ones that I've copied from other artists will have the origional artists work with it.

I did the copy with pencil and then put the image in my computer and used microsoft paint to trace my pencil using the curve function and then colored it in (don't do too much of that -paint is not a good drawing program.

I used my memory from copying Babs Bunny and created this husband & wife rabbit couple (took all of 10 minutes to draw)

This is my latest drawing and one I'm real proud of. I wanted to do a drawing that was my own and had no reference material used. I can only draw female characters with references (I can do them real well copying other's work but not on my own) so I drew a male character (I always drew them decently but never an anthro character). I thoughtit turned out real well especially since I did it in just over 5 minutes. Wasn't sure of how to color it because most cats have patterns in their fur and I'm not advanced enough to do that real well so I wanted a solid color. I didn't want to do black so I picked blue grey (I wanted a real color). While doing so I felt I might have made a mistake in the color but it turned out decent enough. I like the expression I made with the face and becaue of that he just seemed like a Justin (plus I always thought that was a cool name). Also because of my mani passion (music) I gave him a Savatage shirt.

I'll add more when I have more time. Most will be copies but I am using various reference material to create my own female anthro character (to act as either a wife or girlfriend to Justin Cat).

Definitely an improvement over some of your older stuff. The Justin dude *cough*fursona*cough* looks pretty cool.

No, I believe art and cartoons are the only thing we have in common (apart from non-metal listening). Musically and politically (age as well) we are miles apart. Not a bad thing but there is very little we have in common.

Why are you drawing on school paper? Get yourself a drawing pad or sketch pad!

I use school paper because it erases better. Sketch and drawing paper is for erasing light pencil marks and I have a habit of drawing too hard for that (I try to draw lighter but I can't seem to do it-it's just more natrual for me to draw hard). I usually trace the school paper onto drawing paper (usually on my own work-not copies) but at the time I was lazy and eager to finnish my drawing so I didn't transfer it onto better paper.

Couple things you can do to help with that. One, use a drawing paper that has a smooth surface...like rendering/marker paper (you can still use colored pencil to color on it). Comes in Large black pads. Second, if you are, do not use a regular #2 pencil....terrible for drawing and for coloring over. Get yourself some drawing pencils. And third, do you have a gray clay eraser? If not, get one. A must have for anybody that likes to draw with pencil. They really take up lead well, especially on the paper I mentioned.

You can find all this at a Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Aaron Brothers. And perhaps even find a date while your there.

If you already know all this and or have all this, then just ignore me... Rolling Eyes

All very sound advice. I might not care for his taste in music , but T-Roy knows his art.

I will look out for those things. I did have a grey clay eraser but lost it so I'll need to get a new one and a set of drawing pencils. Thanks for the paper tip, anything that will help me with my hard drawing. With regular drawing paper if I had to do too much erasing I'd have to change sheets because it would tear the paper up.

What makes you choose the cartoon characters that you draw?

When it comes to the ones I copy, it's usually the ones I feel I can draw. I find a lot of beauty in many forms (women, nature, and I'll be honest female cartoons characters). I can't do scenery without it looking like a child's drawing, I can't draw people very well (I can draw men farily decent, but not women-w/o looking like men in drag). That leaves female cartoon characters. The human looking ones I can't get right which leaves anthropomorphic (animal charcters w/ human characteristics) characters. Unless they have elaborate hair styles I find I can draw them pretty good. My thinking in copying is that if I can learn to draw other people's characters I can use the techniques to make my own.

In the past I was always content in drawing strange ailien creatrues because the lack of proper drawing techinque wasn't a problem. I also would draw various other stuff like fake members of bands I would form if I knew enough musicians, tribal tatoos, swords, crosses, skulls and other stuff. Because I was limited in what to draw I eventually got bored. One thing I don't get tired of is pretty women but I could never draw them. As stated I found many female cartoon characters attractive (to be honest I always have) and I started collecting drawings of them. Apart from well know ones I went to look for anime stuff which led to anthro. I have them all (cartoons and pictures of real women) in a folder which I play as a slideshow. While playing the slideshow on my MP3 player, I figured that I could learn to draw the cartoon caracters and soon bought a notebook and some pencils and started to pause the pictures at various characters and draw different parts (eyes, noses, mouths, etc.). I then ventured into copying full faces and eventually heads (I picked the anthro charcters because they were the ones I could draw best) and it skyrocketed. I hated to stop drawing a year or so before because drawing has always been a past time of mine. At first I felt embarassed to find cartoon characters (especially anthro) attractive at my age but I've come to accept it and it has now beome my muse. I'm glad to be drawing again and this time I actually want to improve and get better.

The problem with my nefound interest in drawing is that I don't have a whole lot of time to devote to it. At the time I was bored and found my life in a stalemate. No friends, girlfriend, and school almost 1/2 a year away it was good to finally have something to fight the mon..monoton...menonoton...the boredom (a tribute to Porky Pig). However, shortly after I had to move school up and that is where I am now. I find some extra time for copying and drawing here and there but since art is not where I will make my living it takes a backseat. Too bad I hadn't gotten this muse several years ago whene I needed it-oh well it gives me a hobby.

Apart from what I've done recently I will also post some of my older drawings (unfortunatly I don't have anything pre-high school-they're somewhere but I have no idea where) when I get around to it (I have 10 days off of school here soon so I will have plenty of time).

These are some characters for a series I had an idea for but never pursued. It's about a bunch of different characters in an apartment complex. The characters are steryotypical types and the landlord is a fat grumpy man:

Other various drawings:

Hand drawn copy from the album incert

I found I also had a knack for tribal-like tatoos:

I have some more copies I will post soon. One I did a while back and two recent ones.

BTW T-Roy, I still have them on notebook paper because I just find it easier to work with, it's the only paper I have with me at school, and I can't find any marker paper and nobody at the art stores has ever heard of it (I didn't remember the rendering part, but I didn't see any of that either-maybe it's a locational thing). Coloring over a #2 pencil is no problem because I trace over with sharpie and erase the pencil which gives me no problem with coloring.
