PostSubject: Fixing a Scratched CD?   Wed Feb 17, 2010 3:23 pm

I thought we discussed this topic before, but darned if I can find it. Anyhoo...

I just popped in my Candlemass Nightfall cd and it started skipping. I took it out and it's got a big scratch coming right out from the center hole. I know it wasn't purchased that way, so I'm guessing one of my kids did it when they knocked some cd's out of the rack. The center spindle of the cd tray most likely caused the scratch.

Does anyone have a tried & true method to fix a scratched & skipping cd? I've hear/read about using toothpaste to buff it out, but never tried it myself.

Any suggestions? And no, my microwave does not have a "repair CD" button.

Polishing compound and a car buffer works pretty good from my experience.

I've tried two different store bought setups. One was a hand cranked wheel lookin' thing. You spray on some finely misted water and then put CD into the doohickey and crank away. It never once brought back a CD from the dead for me. Not even minor scratches could be polished out.

Then last year I bought a hand rubbing kit. It came with rubbing patches, polish compound (looks/smells like liquid car wax), rinse/water solution and a base to hold the CD while you "go to town" on it. Once again....have been unable to bring back a single CD with even minor scratches.

THE ONLY, success I have ever had is taking my game CD's and or DVD's to a "Game Stop" video game store and paying like $1 per CD (which I was glad to pay) to have this teenager with more metal on his face than Optimus Prime, polish them on an actual power, CD polishing unit. They come out like new every time. Try it, those little game shops are everywhere and have never turned me away.

No Hastings that I know of in my neck of the woods, but I believe there is a GameStop in the local mall, so I'll probably go that route. Thanks for the advice T-Roy and Shiney.

You know that infomercial for that pen that fills scratches on your cars clear coat? They boast that is has UV hardeners in it. I've wondered if that thing wouldn't work on single CD scratches.

AND IF YOU BUY ONE RIGHT NOW THEY'LL INCLUDE A SECOND PEN FREE, A SET OF WORLD CLASS STEAK KNIVES AND THIS HANDY FACIAL HAIR TRIMMER FREE*, ALL FOR $19.99!!!

*shipping and handling, county, state, federal tax not included. Minimum shipping fee $30.

I called 2 local Game Stops last night and both of 'em shot me down. The first one said they used to do it, but are not allowed (?) to anymore. The 2nd flat out said no, but told me they sold buffing compound that might work.

That's what I was thinking. I called ahead so I wouldn't waste a trip, but maybe I'll just go there in person and turn on the ol' charm. Well, that and a coupla bucks.

I have had buffing wheels on a bench grinder in my music room for years and it works like magic. It takes a completely worthless disc and usually makes it look like new! I got the grinder in Winnipeg for C$35 and the wheels cost around 5 bucks. Great investment if you take your collection seriously!

I tried this method recently and it actually worked... turns out you can salvage a scratched CD by buffing the playing surface with plain ol' toothpaste!!

http://www.wikihow.com/Repair-a-CD-With-Toothpaste

I ordered a bunch of used CDs from GoHastings a few months back and one of 'em (Alice Cooper's HEY STOOPID) showed up in really bad shape, it looked like it had spent some time sitting on a gravel driveway. Fearing the worst, I put it in the player and yep, it skipped like a mutha. So I called Hastings, told'em that it was shot to hell and asked if I could get a replacement. The lady on the phone sez that they didnt' show any more copies in stock so she simply refunded the $$ I'd paid for the disc. I asked "Do I have to return the bum disc to you?" and she sez "No, we don't need it back, it's yours."

...so anyway, now that the thing was mine free and clear I figured what the hell, I had nothing to lose by trying to salvage this thing. I Googled "fixing a scratched CD" and found the above link. Sounded weird but I reasoned that if I tried this method and the disc still skipped, I could just sh*tcan it, cuz my money had already been refunded.

So I followed the instructions above (note: you need to use regular "white" toothpaste, not the "gel" kind) and lo and behold, HEY STOOPID played fine after a rinse and some drying time.

I can't guarantee that it'll work for everyone and I certainly wouldn't recommend trying it on your rare/vauluable discs, but it worked for me in this case.
