A friend of my wife's lived over there for 2 years working as a teacher and doesn't speak a word of Japanese. She said it wasn't much of a problem because so many of them spoke English. The only time it was more of an issue is when she went outside of the big city areas or talked to old people. The younger generation wanted to practice their English.
