So these live recordings are all legit and authorized by the band (or Jim's estate)? I thought they might be bootlegs, since I've never seen them. Speaking of, who is in charge of the Morrison estate? He had some siblings, didin't he? I'm assuming his parents are long gone. |
These live recordings are authorized by the estate and you can purchase them from the Doors website and Amazon.
The estate is run by Jim Morrison's surviving siblings (brother and sister) and Pamela Courson's parents, the music is controlled by the surviving Doors and Morrison's estate.
Jim Morrison's dad died last year and his mother died two years ago. |

| Just a quick note on this release. When the band agreeded to make their follow up to 'Morrison Hotel' a live album, Paul Rothchild talked the band into playing live in an empty arena and in the studio maybe add crowd noises etc. The band was totally a opposed to this idea, especially Jim Morrison who felt that it was a cheating, but agreeded to do it anyway. The band was suppose to run thru a complete set but it did not turn out that way, first of all the band does not play a full set, second as the recording progresses the band start singing profanities, and on their run thru of 'Build Me a Woman' Jim insults Paul Rothchild and tells Rothchild tells me him to take his improvised lyrics and shove them up his ass. The band stops and starts often and once they completed the so called run through, Rothchild and the band abandon the idea of recording of a live album without an audience. This disc is strictly for die hard Doors fans and not for a newbie or causal Doors fan, but it is an interesting listen to band attempting to recording under duress and then doing whatever the hell they feel like it. |

July 22, 1969 at the Aquarius Theatre, only two tracks where released that where thought to bu useable, one was 'Gloria' which was heavily edited and pieced together from different performances on 'Alive, She Cried' and later 'In Concert'
The other was 'Mental Floss' which was released in the boxset. |

| The Doors put out a limited edition box set which is made up of various live recordings of a number of bootlegged shows. The shows range from 1967 to 1970. I do not own this boxset, only a limited number where printed and where meant to be a collector's item, at the time I did not buy it and I have regretted ever since. I have listened to it and the sound on the 4 disc set range from acceptable to complete rubbish, it is meant for the die hard Doors fan and it is of interest because it contains the only known live recordings of 'The Changling' and 'L.A. Woman' |

| Damn, Manny, you kickin' ass on this one. I haven't had anything to say in this thread since my Doors collection is next to nuthin' (my wife has their debut on CD, and I own the movie on DVD and the film soundtrack) but I have always had a casual interest in 'em and this thread has taught me some stuff about the Doors that I didn't know. For example, I honestly had no idea that the Doors released two studio albums after Morrison's death.
Back in my college days (when the Doors movie was current and therefore interest in them was very high amongst the college/stoner/hipster crowd) I went to see a Doors tribute band called "The Soft Parade" a bunch of times. They're from New Jersey and their lead singer (Joe Russo) is not only a frighteningly eerie Morrison lookalike but an amazing soundalike as well. They're still active (currently celebrating their 20th anniversary) and they play all over the country, Manny, so if you ever get a chance to check'em out, I highly suggest you do so. Obviously I'm too young to have been to a "real" Doors show but seeing these guys a few times gave me a pretty good idea of what it must've been like. They're awesome!!
http://thesoftparade.com/
OK, that's all I got to say. After reading this thread I now have an urge to throw on my DVD of the Doors movie, and maybe check out some of the albums described in this thread. . _________________ "God's the ultimate playa, so naturally He's going to have some haters," rapper Ice Cube said. | This concert was recorded on May 1, 1970, it is another excellent performance by the band. It is a very tight performance by the band, Jim Morrison voice sounds strong, Krieger and Manzarek sound confident and Densmore lays down a solid back beat, an incredible set of musicians who seem to anticipate what their unpredictable lead vocalist is going to take them. On this show Morrison is all business, sings his song and only speaks to the audience toward the end of the show and lets the music do the talking. As far as the set list, for a Doors show, it is somewhat predictable but the band also changes arrangements and during the show they preview a song that they seem still working on that would later show up on 'L.A. Woman' , the song is 'Been Down So Long' and during the song 'Soul Kitchen' which is the last track, he recites the Lord's prayer, but not in mocking or ironic tone. Overall a great concert with the band giving it their all. Also what it is really cool is the first track where the manager of the concert hall is begging fans to clear the aisles before the band begins. Great CD that makes you feel like you where there. |

If your cable system happens to have PBS On Demand, the Doors episode of "American Masters" is available there as well... I just ordered and recorded it to watch later _________________ "God's the ultimate playa, so naturally He's going to have some haters," rapper Ice Cube said. I tried to watch it last night but started dozing off after about a half hour (it was late), so I'm gonna have to watch the rest at a later date. _________________ "God's the ultimate playa, so naturally He's going to have some haters," rapper Ice Cube said. Yea, it's kinda spooky isn't it? The Soft Parade's been around for 20 years now (!) so they know their sh*t. Haha. I haven't seen'em in about ten years but I'm sure they can still throw down when they play live. They're based out of NJ but looking at their site, they travel all over the country (and even out of the country) so I would strongly suggest you check'em out if they're ever near you. _________________ "God's the ultimate playa, so naturally He's going to have some haters," rapper Ice Cube said. I don't have PBS On Demand, but I did record a replay on some distant PBS station (channel 257?) at 5:30 am this morning. It's on the tivo now, however God only knows when I'll get around to actually watching it. I've still got stuff on there from January that I haven't watched yet. _________________ A legend in posting since February 1st, 2007

| I was surprised this show was officially released by the Doors. In the liner notes the three surviving Doors mention that Jim Morrison showed to the arena falling down drunk. Not that this is a bad show but it is not a perfect concert like the other live CD's released by the Bright Midnight label. The shows took place on April 10, 1970 and the band did two full sets in one night with Jim Morrison completely blutto. What is amazing is not only can the band follow his lead but he does not miss any of his musical cues. At points during the concert Jim sounds like his mumbling and at one point during 'Break On Through' the band waits and waits and waits til Jim Morrison starts singing 'We Make the Scene...' making the musical tension explode. The band is on fire and the audience is in for the ride, getting rowdy and encouraging Jim and the band. I am amazed how well this band can read each other in live setting and the band even covers when Jim, amazingly the only time on disc where he blows his musical que on 'Back Door Man' band quickly cover for him. Also the version of 'Light My Fire' on this concert Jim starts singing blues songs 'Summertime' ' St James Infirmary' 'Fever' and recites one of his poems, apparently without telling the band what he was planning on doing, the band led by John Densmore do not miss a beat and follow him perfectly. Not a perfect show but a great show with both the audience and the band having the time of their lives. |

I find that both amusing and amazing that bands could do that back in the day. When's the last time a major act rocked out 2 performances in one night? _________________ A legend in posting since February 1st, 2007
