| So for all you vinyl junkies... I've been discovering my dad's collection out in my parents' garage. It would be kind of cool to try to pick up some obscure stuff that maybe never got a CD release. But I'm curious -- is vinyl your preferred format? Would you buy a vinyl copy of a new album instead of getting the CD? And why? | Doomdance wrote: | | To bad Iron Maiden always release their albums as picture discs. It's the only band I buy cd's from because I absolutly HATE picture discs. I just wish they would release their latest records on just plain black vinyl. |
What's the difference? Not being smart, I just want to know what the benefit of plain black vinyl is. |

| I love vinyl, but frankly I still listen to CDs more.
Vinyl has a warmer sound IMO. Perhaps nostalgia plays a part in it. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

I'm not a vinyl expert but from what I can tell, picture discs don't stand up to repeated plays the way a plain ol' black vinyl record does. I've never experienced it myself (as I only own a couple of picture discs and they were played only rarely) but I've heard stories of the sound quality on frequently-played picture discs degrading over time till they become a scratchy, mushy mess. Something to do with the different type of vinyl/plastic they use to make the discs, the grooves don't hold up over time and become damaged.
Picture discs were still a "neat collectible" kinda thing though. _________________ "Boys, set the terror level at code brown, 'cause I need to change my pants." -- President Hathaway, "Monsters vs. Aliens"

I can tell you that The Final Frontier does not sound as good on picture disc as opposed to CD.

Smurf!!!!! O well. I have started collecting vinyl of my favorite bands to add to those collections. Personally, I think CD's sound better. I have compared both on a Denon receiver with Klipsch speakers and CD's always sound better. The only exception is Metallica's Death Magnetic, because the vinyl doesn't have the same crappy mastering job as the CD. |

| I only asked because I'm thinking of picking up one of those record/CD/cassette/mp3 players and have seen vinyl pop up on Amazon for very cheap in their used Marketplace. Just would be a cool thing to have a few vinyls, to know that they were pressed "back in the day" and not some remastered/reissued CD. |

It's cool to have some Vinyl.... If you're looking for a player, here's what I have and it's a great one for the price:

| Got that one on Ebay, but I also pick up a lot of my vinyls when I make trips to Vegas, Phoenix and LA. Some great vinyl stores in those towns. I've also picked up a handful from a local record store called Charlie's Records in Albuquerque. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| Ohhhhh my goodness, I remember seeing that "SPEED METAL" compilation in stores back in the day. That cover belongs in one of our "WORST ALBUM COVER" threads I'd say. What record label was that released on, Ult? Would I be correct in assuming the Aerosmith record is a bootleg? Looks like a real old one too. Thx - as I mentioned before, this is the first LP I have heard that sounds better than the CD. THe sound isn't compressed to hell like on the CD. |
