If OM is an A+ album this is a C+. But hey, that's a grade or two better then the stuff before it.

Agreed. Great track listing, but no idea why TLWB was arranged differently... maybe becuase with age, Tate's voice can't reach those sustained highs?

He hit them on QoTR on the same album...

I kind of like the rearrangement of TLWB...it works. What I don't care for is Kelly Gray's style. I saw them on this tour (teh Q2K tour) with Gray and I have the Live Evolution DVD and he is the weak link, IMO. All through the set, he changes/simplifies key DeGarmo parts...lame. Mike Stone never did that...

Mike Stone was actually a really good guitar player. I just don't think he fit with the band either style wise.

Listening to OM:2 again recently (the live version on the DVD) I'd have to say that he was a much better fit than Gray. And, if I remember, didn't he produce and write a chunk of OM:2? That album, for as much as it was panned and compared to the original, was LIGHT YEARS better and closer to Queensryche's essence than either Q2K or (gag) Tribe...and I think that's at least partially contributable to Stone...

I have to agree with our prodigal son Shawn, Mike Stone did fit in, he seemed to try to morph Queensryche to a 'modern' (retarded term for music btw) band and away from their metal and prog roots.

OMII is kind of weak at times, especially toward the end, but it's the best album since Promised Land. I still say "Re-Arrange You" is one of the band's best songs ever, even though it's hard to compare it to earlier stuff since it was written by Geoff and some other dude that's not even in the damn band. Either way, solid album, but a definite disappointing end to the possibly the best concept album ever recorded.

Mike Stone's early punk band. Great album. He also sang two tracks on the first Wiszdomstone EP--power metal type singing. The dude's definitely got talent.

I meant look wise and attitude he didn't fit in. I think he actually had an interest in being with the band and playing metal, but the rest of the band just didn't seem to care.

More useless Mike Stone trivia: he was also a member of Peter Criss' short lived pre-KISS reunion band, CRISS. Their CAT #1 album was pretty awful, but they were a decent live band (saw'em twice w/Ace Frehley's solo band in mid-to-late '95)

PostSubject: Re: Queensryche Discography   Sun Aug 22, 2010 6:46 pm

I really hate it when bands turn to cop-outs like this one. No band should ever try to recreate former glories, such as the original 'Operation: Mindcrime'. They will never succeed in creating anything even remotely close to the original, no matter how hard they try. In Queensr˙che's case it seems as though the falling sales of the latter records pushed them to bring back Nikki, Dr. X and Sister Mary once more. I think I actually hated this album without even having heard a single note from it. Unfair, I know. But this band haven't exactly impressed me much the last decade or so. And sure enough, the first spins left much to be desired. Only the frenetic chorus in "I'm American" was easily remember, but not for the right reasons. It actually grained on my nerves at first. I was not surprised, but still disheartened. Then I remembered how much I disliked the first 'Operation: Mindcrime' when it was brand new. So I gave part 2 a second chance, and a third, and fourth. Eventually at least some of the songs opened up to me. It is obvious that Geoff and the boys have tried to recreate the sound and feel of the original, while at the same time attempting to sound current. And since I've never been one to dwell on the story at hand, it will always be the music that counts. I've told myself that it was when Chris DeGarmo left that the Queensr˙che I loved died. But that is really unfair, as Michael Wilton and Mike Stone are more then capable in delivering an authentic Queensr˙che sound. So I guess that the band members musical preferences are just not what they used to be, and since the band has always made a point in moving forward, and explore new territories with each new release, it just makes sense that this is not a carbon copy of 'Operation: Mindcrime'. While I can't say that I truly love this CD, it is still the best Queensr˙che album in 10 years. Most of the songs are enjoyable on their own. But the album as a whole doesn't seem to have the longevity. If the latter half was a strong as the first, this would have gone down as a certified classic. The album sort of falls when it becomes more moody and progressive in songs like "Circles" and "Speed Of Light". And 17 songs are maybe as much as 5 too many. It's nice to hear Pamela Moore taking on the role of Sister Mary again. And legendary Ronnie James Dio (Heaven & Hell/Black Sabbath, Rainbow) brings Dr. X himself to life in "The Chase". So the verdict must be as the saying goes: "Close, but no cigar."

Killer tracks: I'm American, One Foot In Hell, Hostage, The Hands, The Chase

I don't know that I agree. I think Geoff has sort of taken over creative control. Have you heard Soulbender, Wilton's other band?

Bad quality, but that song is pretty killer, and others on that album are great and much heavier than anything QR has done lately. I think Wilton's capable, but I think Geoff is running the show now.

You might be right about this, Eyesore. And I've thought the same before. I just don't understand why the rest of the band agrees to it.

Bonus DVD content
Tour documentary
"The Chase" performed live with Ronnie James Dio in Los Angeles
Queensr˙che Rock & Ride featurette

After the release of Operation: Mindcrime II, Queensryche hit the road performing both the vastly superior original Mindcrime and the follow up, plus 2 encores. They once again brought Pamela Moore and other actors with them. The best part of the tour was when Dio showed up at the Gibson Ampitheater to sing "The Chase" live. The band would record his performance and play it on the video screen during the rest of tour when his part came up during "The Chase"

Queensryche once again decided to film and record a show a Seattle's Moore Theater for release on CD and DVD. This time, they also brought the drum section of a high school marching band to join in during "Anarchy X"

Unfortunately, the marching band doesn't work very well on "Anarchy X". That isn;t the only thing that doesn't work well - disc one, featuring the original Mindcrime just lack the energy of the early performances. Compared to "Operation: LiveCrime", the performance is just lacking. Everything is played well and acted well, but it leaves you lacking.

Disc two features the sequel and 2 encore songs. The performance is a good live version of "Operation: Mindcrime II". Once again, well performed but still lacking energy. There is also some bonus material, the best being Dio and Queensryche together on stage. There is alos a tour doc. There is also a shot of Geoff Tate after the show - in a fuzzy robe drinking a glass of wine. If there is any doubt on who runs the Queensryche show now, that image should show you that Tate is fully in charge, drinking his wine in a fuzzy robe after every gig.

I found myself getting bored with the DVD, and didn't watch it all in one sitting. This would be another CD/DVD's to own if you want to own the entire Queensryche discography. Otherwise, do what I did and rent it from Netflix!

Reading this thread, I never realized just how many live albums Queensryche put out in a relatively short amount of time. Mindcrime at the Moore is number 4, right?

Queensryche have long way to go to catch up with Deep Purple who have tons and tons of live releases. IMO all Deep Purple live stuff is essential of course

Motorhead also have an angry butt load of official, semi-official, and officially semi-official live releases.

Maiden's usually good for a live release following every 2nd or 3rd studio album, or so it feels like.

I think both Iron Maiden and Rush intend to release a live album and DVD after each tour and album cycle, also a clever way of beating ( as much one can in the digital age) bootlegers by giving a live document of excellent quality and make a few extra beans in the process.

I'm glad I"m not the only one who thought the performance was horrible. I was going to buy the cd but thought maybe I should get the dvd instead to watch it acted out but I guess I made a mistake. I don't know what it is but I hate watching Geoff Tate singing. He makes way too many odd facial movements and he always looks awkward. No doubt that hes probably one of the greatest singers and one of my favorites but he's just hard to watch for me. To the point I cringe at the site of him coming on the stage and wish he would just stay behind the curtain.
