For a very brief moment, Quiet Riot was a rock & roll phenomenon. Famously described as the first heavy metal band to top the pop chart (a claim that greatly depends on one's exact definition of heavy metal), the Los Angeles quartet became an overnight sensation thanks to their monster 1983 smash album Metal Health. But Quiet Riot's road to success had in fact been long and arduous, and when their star power subsequently began to fade, their fall from grace was ironically accelerated by the man who was most responsible for taking them to the top: singer Kevin DuBrow. Unable to suppress his infamous motor mouth from assaulting many of Quiet Riot's peers, DuBrow gradually alienated his fans and fellow musicians, and in the face of plummeting record sales, faced the iniquity of being fired from his own band. The dust eventually settled and DuBrow was able to resurrect Quiet Riot in the 1990s. The band would never be as lucrative as they were in their heyday, but DuBrow and company remained active until DuBrow's tragic death in late 2007.

QUIET RIOT

1977 CBS Sony Japan

Kevin DuBrow - lead vocals
Randy Rhoads - lead/rhythm guitars
Kelly Garni - bass guitar
Drew Forsythe - drums

1."It's Not So Funny"
2."Mama's Little Angels"
3."Tin Soldier"
4."Ravers"
5."Back to the Coast"
6."Glad All Over"
7."Get Your Kicks"
8."Look in Any Window"
9."Just How You Want It"
10."Riot Reunion"
11."Fit to Be Tied"
12."Demolition Derby"

The story of Quiet Riot begins with vocalist Kevin DuBrow and guitarist Randy Rhoads, who started the band in 1975 after disbanding an earlier project named Violet Fox, and completed their first lineup with bassist Kelli Garni and drummer Drew Forsyth. The band thrilled audiences packing the L.A. nightclubs, but found it difficult to land a record deal during the disco-dominated late '70s. Eventually securing a contract with Columbia Records in Japan, they recorded two moderately successful albums -- a 1978 eponymous debut and 1979's Quiet Riot II. Both albums have little in common with what both Quiet Riot and Randy Rhodes would later produce during the 80's.

The band's debut is a sort of mixed affair. It is mainly a pomp rock album with heavier leanings. The album isn't necessarily bad, but it really sounds directionless. Tunes such as "It's Not Funny", "Ravers", and "Get Your Kicks" have high energy and certain potential, but they desperately lack that spark that would make later QR songs classics. Rhodes' guitar playing is dynamic, but not up to the level that would be showcased on the "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman" albums, which would soon make him a legend. This album, along with the band's second, to this day have not been officially released in the US. I recommend it as a download to hear the roots of Randy Rhodes and Kevin DuBrow, but the lasting power just isn't present on this album. For diehards only.

SUMMARY: A really tough listen 4/10

I agree with Spec's review, the band was not ready for prime time, the songs are not that great and while you hear the potential, especially in Randy Rhoads, he and the rest of the band are let down not only by their own songs but the horrid production.

It took me years (pre internet) to track this and the second Quiet Riot album down, and while I am glad I own them, I was also very disappointed.

Still I do wish that Randy Rhoads estate and I suppose now Kevin Dubrow's estate would officially release this albums.

I am going to spin it tonight when i get home from work.

Never heard this album, though when QR hit it big circa the METAL HEALTH era, import copies of it (and the following QUIET RIOT II) from Japan used to turn up quite frequently in record stores. They were always priced way too richly for my pre-teen blood though.

Didn't Rhino or somebody release some sort of compilation/retrospective disc a few years ago of songs from the Japan-only albums, or did I imagine that?

Yes, it's called "The Randy Rhodes Years". However, Kevin re-recorded alot of his vocals for that compilation, because on the first 2 albums, he really isn't doing his trademark Noddy Holder imitation. On those albums he sounds like he's purposely toning down his voice to make it more accessible. That's a huge contributor to their lack of appeal to me.

if you watch live clips from the Randy Rhoads era you can see that their produce missed the mark entirely, does no justice to this line up's live sound in terms of Dubrow's vocals and Rhoads layer guitar sound that he perfected with Ozzy.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. Didn't know about the re-recording parts though. That's kinda lame.

I always thought it was rather odd that neither of the two Rhoads QR albums ever got released in the US, you would've thought that as soon as METAL HEALTH hit #1 their label would've rushed those two out into stores to capitalize on the hype.

I think DuBrow was offered to release the first two albums at the height of 'Metal Health' 's popularity but he refused or was not allowed to due to some of the recordings owned by the Randy Rhoads estate, but I am not really sure what the story was with why this albums where not issued during that time period.

MOVING ON....

QUIET RIOT II

1978 CBS Sony Japan

Kevin DuBrow - lead vocals
Randy Rhoads - lead/rhythm guitars
Kelly Garni - bass guitar
Drew Forsythe - drums

1."Slick Black Cadillac"
2."You Drive Me Crazy"
3."Afterglow (of Your Love)"
4."Eye for an Eye"
5."Trouble"
6."Killer Girls"
7."Face to Face"
8."Inside You"
9."We've Got the Magic"

The band's second effort is markedly an improvement from their first. Full of almost commercial rock music, the album flows well, even though you are still left empty after hearing it. QRII features what is the band's second recorded Small Faces cover "Afterglow (Of Your Love)". The first being "Tin Soldier" from their debut. I have never heard the original "Afterglow" so I can't really comment on a comparison, but the QR song is pretty good. In fact, I can't say there is a song on this album that I despise. The songs have a real melodic edge to them that really appeals to me personally. As for my favorites, I really enjoy "Inside You", "Killer Girls", "You Drive Me Crazy", and the original recording of "Slick Black Cadillac". The band sounds more experienced on this album, although this album was recorded almost immediately after the first. The album's cover is at the very least questionable with the manly football players and Randy dressed in baby blue polka dots. Also featured on the cover is bassist Rudy Sarzo, however he did not play on this album. The bass parts were recorded by Kelly Garni before he left the band. After this album, Randy Rhodes would be the second band member to leave the fold when he was persuaded to join Ozzy Osbourne's new band "Blizzard of Ozz". Rudy Sarzo soon followed suit. Quiet Riot would remain stagnant for the next few years with a swinging door of personnel and a switching of monikers to DuBrow while they continued to be a part of the LA music scene. But Kevin DuBrow looked to reform the QR band and in 1982 he would do just that with a little help from producer Spencer Proffer.......

SUMMARY: SOLID EFFORT. I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HEAR WHERE THIS BAND WENT NEXT. 6/10

Excellent review Spec, and I actually like this album, and the songs are a major improvement over the debut, again the album is let down by the horrid production. This album shows off Randy Rhoads a bit more but it is nowhere near the level he wou;ld show with Ozzy Osbourne.

Kevin Dubrow's singing has improved alot and you can detect traces of his trademark howl on a few tracks, maybe if this version had been produced by a Spencer Proffer, Max Norman or someone of that caliber these albums were serve more then just curios, again a good album but not essential unless you are like me a completeist and major Randy Rhoads fanboy.

Great review Spec!!!! Better than the first one is true!!! I remember the first time I heard this album - when I was in high school (circa 1984), a friend had it and lent it to me to to check out. I had Metal Health/Condition Critical already and had no idea that Randy Rhodes used to be in Quiet Riot until he lent me the album. He warned me that it didn't sound like Metal Health. Was a cool listen.

The album is probably best known for the original version of "Slick Black Cadillac". This version is just, well, very 70's sounding. It's better than the first and an OK, not a great album.
