Been spinning Sin After Sin a lot this week and Mob Rules as well.... two different eras of each band but I just started thinking....


Sabbath was always (almost always) stinking heavy, but so as is Priest......


So what say you?????

Tough one.

I guess priest are heavier in a way that they perform more speed metal songs.

At times, i feel that priest are one modern metal band, while sabbath have always had a much more "classical" sound.

So i'd say priest.

Sabbath... the godfathers of the heavier genres of music that followed. Without Sabbath would there be doom metal?.....no. They originated a riff style and song structure that is found in nearly every heavy band to come along since. They were the first to use the flatted fifth in chord structures, the dreaded diabolus in musica of the middle ages that was thought to summon the devil because of it's " evil " sound. Priest took those general ideas and sped them up but also made happier sounding music that, while excellent in it's own right, is not as heavy as Sabbath.

Sabbath is heavy, Judas Priest is hard.

i'd say they are equally heavy in different ways.

Very different bands playing very different styles of heavy metal.

It's a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

Judas Priest have changed so much over the years, it's not really possible to answer.

I mean, I guess Rocka Rolla or Point of Entry don't sound too heavy. But in the 90's they released Painkiller and Jugulator, which at least to me sound heavier than anything Sabbath ever did.

Sabbath didn't change or 'evolve' nearly as much as Priest did. I'd compare that Mob Rules album to something like Screaming For Vengeance. Well, maybe not as fast, but about as heavy sounding.

Priest - Painkiller

It is indeed a tough one - My first thought was Black Sabbath, but then I remembered that Judas Priest released Painkiller - that thing's a beast - as well as Jugulator and Demolition, two very heavy albums. I agree with MC666 - equally heavy, in each their respective ways

Not necessarily in distortion... it's just that Tony's riffs are heavier overall.

Tough one, but Sabbath was consistently heavier than Priest

Depends on what each individual considers "heavy," I guess. I can't really decide.

Both bands came out before there was heavy music and are barely hard rock.

Can we just agree that both bands are heavier than Iron Maiden?

I'd say Black Sabbath, I like them more.

JP vs BS 70s 80s 90s very hard.

I went and weighed my Sabbath and Priest collections. With the Priest box set and all the vinyls, it outweighed my Sabbath collection by a few pounds, so I went with Priest.

Yeah that's a tough choice. I think MC hit the nail on the head with this one.
