PostSubject: John 5   Fri Jan 14, 2011 5:11 pm

I just recently checked out his latest instrumental album... I know he made a name for himself with Marilyn Manson (whom i never liked) and currently Rob Zombie. This guy is right up there with Paul Gilbert in talent from what i've heard so far. How many players can go from shred to country/bluegrass?

Interesting enough David Lee Roth discovered him when he saw him play for k.d. lange, and hired him to play on his low key album 'DLR Band'

Yeah, David Lowery. Dude is AWESOME!!!! I have his first album and it shreds. He's like a cross between Steve Morse and Joe Satriani.

I can't deny that the dude's got skillz, but he's never really played with/on anyone/anything that I've liked.

I first heard of him when he played on Rob Halford's ill-fated "Two" album, VOYEURS.

I later found out that prior to the Two gig he was in a short lived band called "Red Square Black," whom I had the unfortunate luck to see opening for Testament in 1994. Their Primus/Nine Inch Nails style nonsense pretty much encapsulated everything I hated about the 90s music scene.

He's pretty much been a hired gun since he got in the biz.

HA! HA! I was thinking about him being in David Lee Roth's band and John Lowery's (his) name and combined them... oh jeez!

That's about all I know him from. I have that album. It's ok from what I remember. I do recall him getting the Manson gig and thinking, "Hey, that's the guy from David Lee Roth's band with a big make-over." Went from long hair, ripped jeans and flannel shirt to haircut and all Goth-like.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him live with Rob Zombie at some point, but it seems like his talents as a shredder are somewhat wasted in a gig like that. I'm a fan of Rob's, but there is no room for guitar wizardry there. Guy's got talent in spades, though. Never heard John's solo work. That sort of thing isn't really my cup of tea.

John 5 co-wrote several songs and played guitar on the last Skynyrd album.

Definitely.

I'm a big Skynyrd fan and was leery when I heard how much influence he would have on the last Skynyrd album. I shouldn't have worried; John 5's contributions fit right in with the band's sound.

John 5 lives next door to my best friend's house. His in-laws are nice folks, I haven't personally met him yet.

Wasn't he in an all-out thrash band in the early 90's? Or am I thinking of someone else with a stupid stage name?

You should have him serenade you and your friend with a country tune.

Maybe you could strike up a conversation with one of his in-laws that you said were nice and ask if he would mind.

So today was my buddy's 30th birthday and I went over to his place with my friends mom because she had talked to him earlier and said he was a really nice guy and I thought it would be less awkward if she came along to invite him over. He wasn't there. A few hours later I went alone as the party was on and I had a few beers and this time he was. Surprise, surprise, he was a really cool guy and very soft spoken. He never came by, which is understandable, but now it'll be easier for me to approach him in the future to just talk about music and such.
