That was pretty touching. Having grown up with a father who adored his 45's, and L.P's; I get this man's love for his collection and the period of '48-'66. Wouldn't one think that the bozos at the Rock 'N Roll Hall of fame would offer to take this tremendous collection off his hands. Hopefully some serious bidders step forward and due this man and his wife justice. The fact that he's only asking 3 million for a 50 million dollar collection....well, that's a bargain.

The RnR HOF for sure...the Smithsonian would take it, but they would not pay for it.

They need to contact that crazy guy who owns Virgin Airlines....what's his name?

Amazing. I read an article in a magazine about this guy's collection about a year ago. He still hasn't found any takers for it, huh?

That is amazing, and simultaneously so sad. He's right about not knowing what we've lost though. The disposable format of mp3 is another example of art being overcome by consumerism, and this music history is the next victim.

Shawn that is sad.... It's unbelievable to think that only 17% of the material he owns from 1948-1964 is available commercially on CD today....

That story is touching .....

And I think it was a few years before that when he first started trying to sell it. Bummer.

From what I remember, he's got it all stored in a climate-controlled warehouse on his property. I think it was originally a barn that was converted.

If I had $3 million, I'd buy it in a second.

I wouldnt want the whole collection but I'd like to pilfer through it with about $200 in my pocket.

He talks about "nobody cares" and "the whole world is clueless". That's not true, alot of people still love vinyl. It's sad he cant sell it but that comes with being an avid collector. I have alot of sports cards and my friend has millions of sports cards and nobody wants 'em. I aint gonna cry over it. That's part of being a collector, maybe you make money, maybe you dont.

I do love the fact that he cared so much for vinyl LP's and has cared for them and kept them immaculate for decades. Ya gotta love that.

The main problem is that he doesn't appear willing to try and sell the collection off in pieces/lots, he wants a single buyer for the whole damn thing. A person with that kind of dedication and that kind of money is gonna be hard to come by.

He should get in contact with an auction house like Sotheby's, if he worked with them they could do a series of big time auctions, which would draw the right people, and he'd probably end up make a crapload of $$. Of course, that would mean the collection would end up being spread around instead of being kept all together in one place, but at least everything would have a home.

Sad story. As it was nearing the end of the clip, I was just waiting for the text on the screen saying the guy died.

Where is he from? Anyone ever been to Record Rama before it closed up?

He offers private browsing for potential buyers to buy just what they want from it...but he charges like $5000 just to come look at it.

When he dies, it'll probably end up in the Smithsonian or something...but nobody will pay for it, Im afraid.

Were he younger and in better health and wanted to sell it, he could Ebay and private auction the hell out of it...but then there's shipping, packaging, costs, etc...he's just not up for it.

No, we leave it to you to be hyper critical.
Makes me wonder, in 20 years will anyone remember music past 5 years?

I wonder how much of his collection is metal and/or rock...

That is one amazing collection, whatever the case. And I agree with what others have said- he really should consider selling it off in lots instead of demanding to sell the whole thing at once to one buyer. Sure, if he did that, it would be spread all over...but after all, he won't care a whit about that after he's gone. Maybe he's just afraid to see it go off into the world chunk by chunk to different locations, and he'll have to wrestle with that in his mind from then on until he dies.

It's an amazing collection that's for sure. It's worth an estimated $50 million. He should auction it off in lots. Who knows if he did it that way maybe he could get more than the $3 million he wants. With his health issues maybe he could have some family help him out with the auctioning.

I have been fortunate to live by this place my whole life and Record Rama has sold me many a used/new cd's over the years. Sadly when this type of store idea took off in the late 90's his prices became more higher and his trade ins were worth less.

He has been trying to sell this business for years. It was an underground thing to do back in the early 90's heading to this place and gives me lots of good memories. He is located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. There is a place in Downtown Pittsburgh similar to this with a huge collection, and a place in the South Hills which may even almost challenge him on the largest collection, but for some reason I cant think of the names of those store at the moment. If I do I will look them up and add them. The place in South Hills is for sale too.

In case the hills thing is confusing, Pittsburgh is separated by 3 Rivers. Basically south of the river in general is called South Hills, and north of the River is North Hills. We dont have much but we have the Steelers, the Pens, and some great trading stores Smile

It is very impressive in size but frankly, ever since I started building my collection of albums it's always been more about quality and more importantly about what I like as opposed to just hoarding a great quantity of albums some or maybe even most of which will never be played more than a couple of times.

I know some people just like to collect for the sake of having the thing and growing their collection in numbers. Personally, I like collecting based on what I know I will revisit time and again.

My cd collection is a modest 400 albums but I can at least say I know each of those 400 albums and have listened to each many times. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that I am familiar with my albums than having albums which never get played.

I think some of you people are missing the point. Between the periods of 1948-1966, the man owns a product of which ONLY 17% is on C.D. I'm guessing a good percentage of the music he has, is ONLY owned by this man. That means, once it's gone, it's gone forever! That should be alarming to everyone on here, regardless of what we might think of the music.

It all depends how you look at it

Strictly from a collector's perspective, it is impressive because his collection is rare and should either belong in a museum and become part of the heritage of rock n roll music.

However, on a personal note I could never do that because my logic in collecting albums is because I like the bands I support otherwise I would not purchase their albums.
