| I'm not really a fan myself, but there's probably some folks here that will care about this announcement from their website... | Quote: |
The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.
The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg an Jack are feeling fine and in good health.
It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.
Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of The White Stripes’ intense and incredible career.
Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.
Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.
With that in mind the band have this to say:
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

I think they've been pretty inactive for awhile now. I guess this just makes it "official". He's in some other band whose name escapes me at the moment and she's filming amatuer porn.

| I also thought they were broken up. There was about five minutes years back where I thought they were alright. It passed quickly.
I love the way they use the announcement to push their fan club releases. And the way they treat it like some epic profound event. Not being clued into these things, is there a big cult following for the White Stripes and their music? |

| So basically Jack is going to continue his career and Meg is going to have to end up doing porn :^)
Well, Jack was really good. I hope he keeps forward. But in all honesty, doesn't Meg in real life remind you a little of Meg from The Family Guy? How she is the least cared about in the band, and kind of off putting... lol oh well.
Either way you look at it, I hate to see bands end, but if it is for their best moves, then all the world and luck to them. |

| I like them, but I don't care if they're broken up or not. They released a good amount of music already, and I think Jack is alright with doing his work with the Raconteurs/Dead Weather/Wanda Jackson. |

That's surprising to me. Given the amount of music you purchase, you don't own a single tune by the White Stripes? Amazing. I've liked a few songs here and there, but never felt compelled to purchase anything myself.

It's because I rarely pay full price for bands I'm unsure of. Since I've not heard a full album, I don't want to pay $15.99 for what could be a dud, you know. And that wouldn't matter if their albums could be had for cheap used, but around here their used albums are a buck or two less than the brand new ones. | I could see that. Boston (and the surrounding area) is a college town and these guys are (or were) an undergrad hipster's wet dream.
I've seen their albums pop up every now and then and I've picked up a copy, only to put it down again and go for something else. Oh well. Que sera sera.

| I just downloaded a couple of their albums, and it's some pretty good stuff. Kinda sounds like punk and blues had a bastard child. Elephant, Icky Thump, and White Blood Cells pretty rad albums. |
