GREAT CHOICES! Dokken and VVI would both be right there for me too.

Hardcore Superstar

Wig Wam

Gemini 5

Honorable Mention:

Distorted Wonderland - they only have one album out but if subsequent albums are as good as the first one, they'll easily take over my #1 position.

Thanks, I like your choices too, especially KIX, excellent band. Britny Fox I like, but Cinderella I always liked better.

Glam metal? Hmmmmmm....another genre that's hard to peg.

Gonna go with
CINDERELLA (Night Songs was definitely glam metal)
VINNIE VINCENT INVASION
STRYPER (if they be considered glam)
NITRO (glam to the extreme!)

Oh wait, that's four, oh well.

Stryper
Ratt
Dokken

I dont consider WASP glam, but if they count they would be number one.

Not to split hairs but I put most of the bands you guys are naming in the "hair metal" category. It's really nitpicking but it's how I distinguish the bands I mentioned (all recent bands) from bands from the hair metal era even though the look and sound between the artists is pretty much the same.

I know what you are saying. I actually like bands like Dirty Looks and Dangerous Toys more than Nitro, but I consider Nitro to be a true glam metal band, while DL and DT are not. Even Twisted Sister, which are one of my favorite bands, they had an extreme glam image, almost anti-glam, but their sound wasn't glam metal at all, especially early on.

Yep, I put bands like DL and DT along with Bang Tango, Beautiful Creatures, etc. into the "sleaze metal" category but the dividing lines are shady at best.

I gave up being a genre nazi a long time ago; I only posted that to explain why I picked the bands I did even though I love most of the other bands people posted.

I think Sweet definitely qualifies (great band!).

I'd question Van Halen but if they qualify in this category for you, that's really all that matters.

Ya know, I just re-listened to those clips I posted and I'm actually wondering why this type of music isn't just "metal". Is it the harmonies? "True" metal only has one singer?

Those clips sound like plain old "metal" to me. So does Kix, WASP and a bunch of other bands posted in this thread.

i dont care much about the genre stuff to be honest, glam, hair, sleaze - it crosses over and back so much the definition is so confused its not worth doing..

I agree.

I wasn't trying to "genre-patrol". I was more curious about how people determine where bands fall in their genre pantheon.

And there's a whole bunch of bands out there that fall into what I call "glam/bar room rock".

Stuff like Dogs D' Amour, The Quireboys, The Wildhearts, Diamond Dogs, etc, etc. Not metal by any stretch but defeinitely "glammy".

EDIT: Sorry if I derailed your thread MB. I really was just trying to explain why I posted 4 band most people have never heard of.

TheKing is glam! With my apologies to Hardcore Superstar and 'We Dont Celebrate Sundays'

Come, smash up your booth tonight
Sippin'on coke
I'm fine
That clown keeps me up all night
Til he's back to being dust
Come with me
make that clown run for his life

I'm only lonely when the joint is closed
Lonely when everyone's going home

[Chorus:]
They don't celebrate Sundays anymore
(they don't celebrate Sundays)
McDonalds is not open on Sundays
(they don't celebrate Sundays)

Touched, touched by that stupid clown
My blood begins to boil
That clown keeps me up all night
Til he's back to being dust
Come with me
make that clown run for his life

There's no, no Mcdonald's in my house
No dumb clown in my house

[Chorus:]
They don't celebrate Sundays anymore
(they don't celebrate Sundays)

[Chorus:]
They don't celebrate...

Come, smash up that clown tonight
(McDonalds don't celebrate Sundays)
I said come to Burger King, celebration to the night
(McDonalds don't celebrate Sundays)
I said come, smash up that clown tonight
(McDonalds don't celebrate Sundays)
I said come to Burger King, celebration to the night
(McDonalds don't celebrate Sundays)

(McDonalds don't celebrate Sundays)

Uh, without making distinction between glam and hair, and cheating a little with multiple choices, my pick would be:

1. DEF LEPPARD
2. KISS / WINGER / BON JOVI
3. CASANOVA / RATT / DOKKEN

You guys have some great choices!

And nobody is 'genre-patrolling' here. This is all in fun.
