I think most of us have heard this term in our lives related to witches and magic. I learned about its meaning in college in a history class I think:

I first learned of the term as a song by Focus.

That's called "yodelling". Only rock song I know with it.



But you're right, it is a great jam. I also love the Helloween cover of that song which basically does the same thing with updated instrumentation.

That is one of many theories on the origins of the term.

In Scandanavia they say hokus pokus filiokus, which is a corruption of the term "filioque" from the Nicene Creed.

The filioque ain't in my Nicene Creed geek Oh those silly Latins.

Maybe Olaf or Kurt can chime in on the Scandinavian front.

Ha Vartan I knew you would say something about that...

Other theories is that the phrase always had something to do with magic. Oxford dictionary says that its a simplification of the phrase hax pax max Deus adimax, which was supposedly used by conjurors. The theory presented in the bibledex video can be traced back to Archbishop of Canterbury John Tillotson, in the 17th century.
