| What are your favorite Blue Öyster Cult albums? Are there any albums that you feel are poor, or that a newbie to the band should avoid at first?
For me: 1. Cultasaurus Erectus 2. Secret Treaties 3. Tyranny & Mutation 4. Fire of Unknown Origin 5. Blue Öyster Cult
Really, their only "weak" album was Club Ninja. Though I know it's blasphemy, I tend to think that overall "Agents of Fortune" is a bit weaker than the rest of their catalog as well, despite the fact that the album has their biggest hit in "(Don't Fear) The Reaper". _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| 1- Agents of Fortune-Great place to start has their biggest 'hit', excellent songwriting, is accessible, and excellent guitar work from Buck Dhrama
2-Tyranny and Mutation-Kicks unholy ass, and is good way to get into what American metal sounded like in the early 70's
3-Imaginos- Have no idea what concept is about, but the album kicks ass, 'nuff said
4-Fire of Unknown Origin- a bit mellower but still heavy if you get my drift
5- Blue Oyster Cult-One of the best debuts by an era dominated by excellent debuts by metall and yes I said metal bands of the genre's formative days

| The only B.O.C. I have is FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN and one of those cheapie "Super Hits" compilations. I like'em both fine, for whatever that's worth. I've just never gotten round to exploring their catalog any deeper than that. _________________ "Boys, set the terror level at code brown, 'cause I need to change my pants." -- President Hathaway, "Monsters vs. Aliens"

I don't even care much for those. I had that Best Of comp listed above, but it never grabbed me by the short & curlies and I ditched it. _________________ A legend in posting since February 1st, 2007

| 1. Tyranny and Mutation 2. Blue Öyster Cult 3. Cultösaurus Erectus 4. Fire of Unknown Origin 5. Spectres 6. Some Enchanted Evening 7. On Your Feet, or on Your Knees 8. Agents of Fortune 9. Secret Treaties 10. The Revölution by Night 11. Mirrors
In my eyes, those are the "classic" BÖC albums. Club Ninja is okay, but has really bad production, and the songs seem forced.
Imaginos tells an interesting story, but it's an album of mostly re-records of songs that were already perfect off the bat.

Other than "Astronomy", what other songs on Imaginos were on other BOC albums? I know the songs were written long before Imaginos was released but I though "Astronomy" was the only one that had seen the light of day before. |

"Blue Oyster Cult" which was originally called "The Subhuman" from Secret Treaties, and I think a few others. If someone knows otherwise, feel free to chime in. |

Man, I wish I still had my old vinyl collection. Anyway...
Cultosaurus Erectus Fire Of Unknown Origin
They're my favs.
Actually, I have a soft spot for Extraterrestrial Live too because I saw them on that tour. That album puts me right back on City Island in Harrisburg, PA watching Eric Bloom stumble sideways on to the stage and the giant Godzilla. Aldo Nova was the opening band. |

| Well, Blue Öyster Cult being my favorite band, it took me a little while to think this over, but if I had to reccomend 5 albums off the bat to get someone into the band that would be a good representation:
1. Blue Öyster Cult 2. Secret Treaties 3. Agents Of Fortune 4. Extraterrestrial Live 5. Fire of Unknown Origin
As for the other part of Ult's question, generally, for a newbie trying to get the "feel of BOC, I probably wouldn't reccomend getting Mirrors, The Revolution By Night, or Club Ninja until later, because they aren't really representative of the band overall.
The only albums I think are weak (even though I like them both quite a bit) or Revolution and Club Ninja. Too many outside writers and reaching for that next "Top 40" thanks to the record execs really slow those albums down.
And as for a start off comp? The Workshop Of The Telescopes is the only way to go. |
