can you get us a screen capture of the box that pops up? that'd be helpful. it could be just a case of malware, especially if it's trying to push a way to "fix" the disc problem.

Are you getting this message when you first turn the computer on?

Malware infection from a porn site? if it's a box that keeps popping up then have it scanned, MALWAREBYTES is a free and powerful tool though it would be best to post a screen shot of it (just pess ALT + PrintScreen then paste it using windows paint, save as jPeg)

go to the Kaspersky website as well and download the FREE TDSS Killer. It takes care of malware like that.

Haha, nowadays I second that. After I took a Linux class this last fall I switched to Ubuntu and have loved it!

Sure sounds like a malware infection. I had a nasty one of those last year. Damn thing kept telling me my files were corrupted and I needed to run a check. Popup looked just like a Windows popup. WHen you ran the "Fix" program, it came back and said it had fixed most of the problem but to completely fix it, I need to click this link. That's when I realized I'd been had. Things are really sneaky too. This one actually changed a ton of critical files on my drive to "hidden" making me think they'd been wiped out. The frustrating thing is I have no clue how I got it. I don't go to porn sites, I don't open attachments from people I don't know, I don't go to fileshare sites; no clue where it came from.

I tried several fixes and eventually got rid of most of it but since my laptop was 5 years old already I figured I'd just get a new one and keep the old one for storing music files.

In the past I had that a few times on my desktop. I've backed up files and wiped the hard drive at least 4 times on that confounded machine (it is a seven year old computer).

I'm so glad I switched to Mac several years ago, never had a single issue in all that time.

I would like to try Mac, but I don't have the money for that right now and I don't need anymore credit card debt.

I would highly recommend Ubuntu if you're serious about changing operating systems. Very simple, looks nice, lots of software available, and you can always leave a Windows partition in case of emergency. And of course free

i second that recommendation. Linux is definitely superior. Ubuntu & Mint are also very easy to learn.

The Mac OS is built on a unix platform as well. I have Windows installed on a separate partition but I literally never use it, I might log in about once every couple months.

I've had this laptop for a while running Windows 7, and the only issue I've had was trying to getting all my old favorite games to work like Diablo II. I've never had a problem with viruses with any Windows PC.

Haters gunna hate.
