Yes, Witchfinder speaks the truth - Sadly, music will always be shared and enjoyed illegally, and people will see music as a given, instead of actually having to spend money on it - I'm not judging the act of actually downloading music, I'm judging the idiots that actually complain when their favourite sites are closed down - I don't care what people say, those people are complete idiots.

I think there's a difference between the sharing of music as it happened in the past (before the 2000's) and the piracy of today. Back then most of the time music was copied to audio cassette or tape, there was a loss of quality and on top of that, at least here in Germany, a percentage of the sales of empty cassettes and tapes went to the artists directly. They tried that system with CD-Rs, the so called Audio CD-Rs but that system failed and since then it's piracy.
I guess one could argue that MP3, the favourite audio format in piracy is also a format where a loss of quality happens but unlike audio tapes, people of today just ignore the bad quality and live with it, instead of thinking "It sounds like crap, but i like the album....i buy it"

I will admit that i too downloaded lots of music over the last 12 years because there's no media to discover new music. Radio station always play the same pop crap, TV...there's nothing here in Germany, so i read somewhere on a website about a good band, i download the files, like it and buy it. At least i don't see a problem with it and in the past 12 years my CD/Vinyl collection grew from 110 to 1300 because of this 'piracy'. If something is good, i buy it.

I completely agree that there needs to be something done against those one-click hoster like Megaupload & Co. because the people behind that site make millions trough piracy but i don't see any problem with file-sharing as it was once intended, sending 1-2 mp3 files to a friend so he can check it out. I do it and in 99% of the time, those friends are thankful and buy a album they never even heard of. Same did those friends to me with sending some songs.

Of course i hate people who think they have to get everything for free. Who think that musicians make music out of love for it and therefor don't need any money (one of the stupidest things i ever read) and of course the "i don't support those big companies, they make enough money".
I think one of the reasons, the music industry looks like crap is because of those people who steal music and never buy anything. Just take a look at the industry: There were once so many different record labels, while today there are only 3-4 big companies (Universal, Sony & co.) left and about 15 smaller Indy labels. Everytime i look through my CDs/Vinyls i see so many labels that don't even exist anymore...Epic, Columbia are no Sony, Island Records belongs to somebody, Geffen belongs to somebody, EMI is basically done. It's sad because with only 3-4 companies left, we have boring music. The charts says it all, 100 times the same pop and rap crap, compare this to the 60's, 70's and 80's when so many different styles of music were popular. It's sad.

Anyway i ramble on, i'm happy that after the Megaupload bust a lot of hosters and even some torrent-sited went off. I still think that sharing a couple of songs between friends to give them an impression should be OK.

I am an attorney. I understand the law of copyright. I also think that the genie is out of the bottle and copyright is increasingly becoming irrelevant. Technically, what is going on is NOT theft, it is piracy and they are different. Theft removes the original item from it's original owner and places it in the hands of another. Piracy makes a perfect copy of the original and sells or distributes that.

Sadly, copyright holders are going to be out of luck because there is no going back. The government can shut down all the sites they want but more will pop up or new technology will be freated to evade them will develop. The music industry's fate was sealed the moment the first CD was pressed. You can never make a perfect analog copy but you can always make a perfect digital copy. I am not sure how to address this issue as the current law can't handle the technological change.

Please note, I am not advocating illegal downloading. I would be pissed if my creations were being pirated with no compensation.

it is rather amusing. Its like when someone got busted for stealing cable back in the day and felt they were wronged...

On a somewhat related note,
Dave Mustaine said the giant record companies got what they deserved, and he smiled when he said it!
Even though he also hates downloading, (as far as I know) he doesn't say much about it because he knows if fans like Megadeth, they will buy an actual copy and/or pay to see them in concert and buy their other merchandise.
