The Beatles were the template the later Boy Bands were built on. They weren't "invented" by the label, they became cultural phenomenons on their own terms through genius songwriting, touring and recordings.

Their astronomical success was what caused the record labels to start "inventing" follow up artists.

It's like "is Black Sabbath Doom Metal?"...the answer is no, obviously...but the influence can be seen.

IMO, the first "boy band" artist was Elvis. I call him "The Original Backstreet Boy". He never wrote a song in his life, he was just pretty and could sing so the girls lost their minds and he became a demigod.

You can't fault him for that. Very few artists at the time wrote any of their own material. The Beatles brought that to the table. And even then, they had to fight for that right through the first couple albums.

With Elvis Sam Phillips saw a "white guy" that could sing the "black music" that the kids were listening to. You could argue that he was "manufatured" for white audiences though.

He definitely was...

Don't get me wrong, I dig some old Elvis songs...and I know it was the norm back in those days for artists & writers to be separate entities. But, like with the "is Black Sabbath Doom?" question, Elvis can certainly be referenced in regards to how boy bands are put together, cleaned up and marketed...and he predates The Beatles, so...

I'm assuming he's referring to the fact that "slow and doomy" was just one small portion of the Black Sabbath sound. If people focus solely on "Iron Man" and "Electric Funeral" then I can see why they might classify Sabbath as doom, but they were WAY more diverse than that.

Like S.D. said, Black Sabbath were very diverse musically...much more than most people realize. While the song "Black Sabbath" can certainly be seen as a root (or THE root) of Doom Metal (which came along years later when bands developed their style based on that song), Black Sabbath themselves are not a Doom Metal band. It's widely known that the members of Black Sabbath themselves don't even consider themselves a Heavy Metal band, but a Hard Rock band.

Much like how Deep Purple is not a Power Metal band, but a lot of Power Metal bands borrow from Deep Purple's influence.

Well, there is one person here who likes some P.O.D. besides Eyesore. I don' listen to them all the time but when the mood strikes me I'll put on sone Fundemental Elements of Southtown, Satelite, or When Angels And Serpents Dance. Most rap rock leaves me cold but I really enjoy their mixture of that and reggae. Actually in WA&SD has very little raping in it, good guitar solos, and lots of melody. They even have a guest spot by Mike Muir in one song (that at one point almost sounds like a Suicidal Tendencies song). These guys I think are a cut above the rest of those in their genre and I'm not suprised to see them back unlike others of their scene. I respect bands who are still around despite their glory days behind them because it actually shows a love of music more than just trying to make a quick buck.

I remember buying a CD from a Christian Bookstore and the lady at the counter tried to convince me they were no good because she saw a video of them drinking beer. I just looked at her and said, "So?"

What db said.

I actually haven't listened to pod for a long time now. POD was a big part of highschool for me, and one of the bands that got me into heavy rock. But It was probably '04 or so the last time i gave these guys an honest listen. For the most part my musical journey has ventures into heavier, proggy territory. However the other day I came across eyes and decided to give it a shot for old time sake, and I surprisingly liked it very much. I mentioned this to a buddy of mine and he borrowed me their last two efforts, I also pulled out my pod collection and started exploring their sound again.
I really don't know why I shelved these guys, I enjoyed every one of these records. They are easy to listen to and actually rock out a lot harder than I remember. It's simple stuff, but it is fairly consistant in it's quality and honesty. After forgetting about these dudes and not even knowing they'd released two records in the meantime, I can honestly say I'm looming forward to murdered love. Go figure.

I think most of us go through that at one point. I think when we're young we abandon things too quickly because we confuse growth with outgrowing. I can't tell you how many times I've re-bought albums by bands I once enjoyed but had sold their albums because I was convinced it wasn't my thing anymore. I've come full circle so many times.

Just humans being, I think.

Great post! So true. I have definitely repurchased a number of albums that I thought I had moved beyond, only to find out years later that I really wanted to hear it again. In the past five years I have really re-embraced the grunge and alternative rock from the early 90s that I grew up with, in particular.

I have also realized that it's ok to have some albums that I only want to listen to on rare occasions, or only one song from a particular band (some pop falls in this category for me, like Come On Eileen or other 80s songs from my childhood). Not all of my music has to be competing for daily listens.

POD have become pretty damn good songwriters. The last album, When Angels & Serpents Dance contains the best music I've heard from them. Here are some highlights:

This is the song they did with Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir:

At 2:57-3:18 the song definatly channels ST.

I respect any band who sticks to their guns when what they're creating is no longer the mainstream darling. Bands like P.O.D., Nonpoint, Taproot...hell, even Limp Bizkit.

Yup, and I think it's easier for a band like P.O.D. because they had 2 independent albums prior to signing with Atlantic and going mainstream, and even though the last album was on Columbia, it's good to see that now they are with Razor and Tie Records with acts like The Sword, Shadows Fall, and Twisted Sister and can pretty much do whatever moves them.
