My first band was Metallica. They were number one to me at first but then I found out about so many really good bands that aren't half as famous as Metallica. In the end, this question just came natural to me. My opinion is that they are kind of overrated. So what's your opinion?

25 years ago I would've willingly taken a bullet for any member of this band.

Nowadays, not so much.

I'd have to say somewhat overrated. I still enjoy their music (some of it, at least) for what it is, although I've never viewed Metallica as "the best band in the world". If I want to listen to thrash, I've got a lot better options than Metallica to choose from.

Somewhat overrated. When I was a teenager (80s) I worshipped them, but by the time the Black album came out my musical tastes were evolving and they no longer had the same impact they once had.

Now in my 40s if I hear some of the older stuff like Lightning or Puppets I still enjoy it, but they've been so overplayed throughout the years that if I never heard any Metallica again, the memories would suit me just fine.

As you get older your skills are supposed to get better, especially if it is what you do for a living.

Songwriting may slack overtime, due to ya only have so much creativity to pull from. But there is no excuse for musicianship to regress. That is why I call them lazy.

I was like Shawn and had my memories, then they released the double vinyl (180 gram 45 RPM)versions of the first four lps and I caught that bug (AGAIN)

Somewhat overrated. Before the Black album they were underrated after that one, overrated.

I revisited all their albums during the past few years (after not listening to them for a very long time). It was fun, but that binge was enough for now.

The first three were underrated, though in thrash circles they seemed always the leading band.

Somewhat overrated. Very good band back in the day but not what I'd call one of the best ever.

really overrated. I think the first 4 are excellent but St. Anger just makes the scales tip.

I like 'Load' and 'St. Anger' ( It took me forever to actually appreciate that album) but they certainly do not much the power and influence of the first 4 albums IMO.

Agreed. Love their first four albums, but not much since. Oddly enough, they are still 'the' metal band in my town, so it surprises my students that tMetallica are not my absolute favourite band, and that I prefer Ride the Lightning to the black album. They've never topped their first albums.
