Katagory V is okay. I have a few of their albums. If I recall correctly, the production is pretty weak, which severely limited my enjoyment.

The songs were cool though...

If Laser's Edge is putting it out, I'm buying it. This sounds awesome!

anyone else here like Tesseract?  I just got their 2013 release, "Altered State," earlier this month, and it has moved its way up to the top of my 2013 list.  Their previous album, "One," was also pretty awesome.  These albums have different singers, it should be noted, and the first album features harsh vocals, while the new one is all clean.  Tesseract tend to fall under the djent label.

I really like Tesseract. I initially enjoyed One more, but after letting Altered State settle with me some, I'd say it's the better album.

I'm pretty sure I agree with you.  I first heard songs from One this fall, and listened to it on youtube like crazy.  Loved it.  Then with a Bestbuy gift card for Christmas I grabbed Altered State and listened to it a couple dozen times during January.  I finally purchased One last week and have listened to it a lot, but I do think that the song writing is better on Altered State.  Maybe it has better hooks, I don't know.  It's really infectious.

One thing I do know is that I'm really glad to have discovered them, because my previous obsessions with The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree are going no where since both bands are in a hiatus. I think Tesseract will fill the void quite nicely.

I've been filling that void left by PT with Riverside, Haken, Sound Of Contact and Big Big Train.

Good call on Riverside. I only have one of their albums (Anno Domini High Definition) and love it. Based on reviews of the latest one, I probably ought to get that as well. I guess I've avoided getting their other albums because of prices. One other obvious fill-in would be Steven Wilson's solo material. I plan on getting that stuff this year.

I tried Haken before and didn't care for them. Sound of Contact and Big Big Train are new names for me though. I'll check them out. Thanks for mentioning them

Just don't expect anything remotely metal, both bands fall into Genesis style progressive rock.

You need to check out Haken's The Mountain, I wasn't a fan of this group initially but this album completely changed my mind.

Had to share for the reason I can't turn it off, its that infectious. Djent modern prog, mostly instrimental; their ep is the best thing I've heard from 2014 so far. And it is free.

Hell yeah! Their debut was so good, and this new tune is great.

I was hoping they'd release another one. Sound hella cool! I still play that debut often.

Yeah, I'm also looking forward to that new Distorted Harmony.

Here's a new band I've discovered. My only exposure so far has been these two clips, but they sound quite promising.

I find Vanden Plas to be "lifeless" ... I don´t like them. I´d stick with the more "well known" bands for that moment ... Symphony X , Threshold , Pagan´s Mind , etc ... and what about Shaaman , would you consider them "Prog Metal" ?

Talking about "older" bands , what would be the "essentials" for you ( then ) ?

Has anyone here heard about "Andromeda" ? someone told me they are "typically" prog metal ...

Andromeda's 'Extension Of The Wish' is a good record.

What about the others ? Could we say that bands like "Circus Maximus" are nothing more than "Dream Theater clones" ?
