"This album is a very complex concept that is pretty hard to grasp. It is about a family in a war situation, about a father that fails to protect his family, about a child who needs a father and not a soldier, about a society that kills and excludes and then takes its hand away from the remains in shock of what it has become. It is about a world I have chosen to call Entropia, which is a combination of the two words "Entropy" and "Utopia". Entropia is suspiciously similar to our world."

Pain of Salvation has never impressed me. I have a few of their albums and...I just can't get into them at all. I think they're boring as hell.

I only have two (one their most recent) and the first one did absolutly nothing for me. However, I really enjoyed Road Salt One which was very little prog and much more retro:

BE was my first taste of them, and I really disliked it. I traded it off. I hardly ever trade things I buy, you know. People said that was probably the worst album to hear first. So I gave them another go. Right now I have Entropia, Remedy Lane, and Scarsick. While not as bad as BE, they still do nothing for me.

Maybe someday it'll click. I don't know.

Be was the other one I got, total crap IMO. I would have sold it off but the damn thing somehow got a scratch (all the way through). Don't know how as I only played it once.

But they have a really great singer, and for some people that is good enough.

Following with pen and a pad of paper. I have a ton of new bands to follow up on. The prog-metal scene is way more in-depth than it first appears. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

There is progressive metal, which I can usually help more with, but then there is also stuff which is in that expanding-on-Dream-Theater vein, which is usually just called prog...... big second recommendation here to Pagan's Mind (second and third albums), and Royal Hunt, although I definitely would not classify them as prog, that is a fantastic band. I would add Eldritch, a lot of stuff over their career has been great, here's a couple of songs from the beginning to the most recent:

Also check out Lanfear, though they are not quite as 'proggy' as some..

Magellan borders more on the prog side of metal, has some of the best drum programming I've ever heard(just sounds like someone playing like electronic drums) and EXCELLENT arrangements. His voice can be annoying to some and the early songs are more like history lessons set to music. If you like the Explorer's Club albums you might like these.

I only have one album (Impending Ascension and a single from a comp, but I really like Magellan. Jacko is one hell of a song:

Very much prog in the vein of Yes and early Genesis. The main songwriter is responsible for a lot of the music on the first Mullmuzzler CD and the aformentioned Explorer's Club.

Another prog metal closer to prog rock I'd recomend, has D.C. Cooper and a member of Shadow Gallery, Gary Wehrkamp. The album is called Voice In The Light).

I HIGHLY recommend the first album if you like Impending Ascension. Yeah, a lot of good things blew up when Portnoy had his falling out with the Magna Carta label. A lot of bands left, Magellan included(I think that they were the first band to be signed). Heard them on Stone Trek(interview and album premeire for Hour) and was hooked!

Yeah, Magellan is awesome! All of their albums are excellent. Sadly, I don't think a new album is coming any time soon. After Innocent God came out, the band said they were working on an album called Inert Momentum. They were attempting to do a Kickstarter thing before Kickstarter had been dreamed of...you know, getting fans to donate money to get the record recorded.

But that went nowhere. Their site was only recently updated, after like three years of silence. Inert Momentum is apparently written but not recorded yet. Kind of a bummer.

They have released a digital-only cover of "Dust in the Wind," though. If you're interested. And on their site (http://www.magellansongs.com), there's an In Progress section where you can download a bunch of demos. Most are incomplete, but it's cool to hear what might become a future album.

If you dig Magellan, check out Arena.

And because this album is so brilliant...

Be careful with Arena though as their albums are quite expensive.

And since we're going toward the prog rock stuff, check out Enchant.
