Watching the Rush documentary the other night, there was a cool clip of Gene talking about first hearing Rush. Someone played the debut album for Gene and he insisted they get Rush to open their Canadian tour dates...which went over so well they completed the tour.

Alex said they opened over 50 shows for Kiss over the next couple years. Gene said if he could describe Rush in one word it would be "fearless".

Instead of "Strutter 78" they should've included "Rip and Destroy" from "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" Laughing very hard

Awwww c'mon. That's an absolutely brilliant re-working of "Hotter than Hell." It would be funny as hell if they busted into "Rip and Destroy" live sometime.

If KISS were really smart They would preform the complete "(Music From)The Elder" album live. That would attract some heads to a show and perhaps make em some good money ? Just a thought.

According to Wikipedia, SONIC BOOM is not quite gold ... it has sold around 450 thou in the United States as of March 2010.

I'm all for this idea, but I think they make quite enough money with Duece and RNR All Night. Wink

I am surprised, I guess all the hype did not add to sales, plus Walmart did not do a strong campaign like they did for AC/DC. IMO KISS sales where never going to match AC/DC's but if Walmart had put in a little more push I think the album would have sold better.

Walmart completely dropped the ball on promoting KISS. Not sure what their problem was but they didn't even put half the effort into what they did for AC/DC. No huge set up for t-shirts, no TV commercials, no signs or banners in the store. If you weren't already tapped into the world of KISS, you wouldn't know it was coming out. All there was at my local Walmart was a pathetic little side display in the electronics section. The cashier that rang me up was probably in his late 30s and after scanning the CD he stared at it for a second and said "Is this new? When they did this come out?"

Still, at least they didn't do as poor of a job as Best Buy did with GNR. What's the point in signing these bands to exclusive deals if you're not going to promote them?

Some lawyers and agents sitting around signing deals is the easy part. Putting together the actual promotion is hard work and costs money. Maybe they figure the artists in question are a big enough draw.

I don't think it would work. If they were going to do a full album performance, The Elder would be a poor choice. Sure, the storyline could make for some nifty visuals, but KISS has built their reputation as a fun, party band, not an epic, concept album band. Leave the artsy-fartsy stuff for prog-rock bands. KISS is better off with meat & potatoes rock n' roll.

The last few tours have been "meat and potatoes" with the exception of what, one or two tunes from "Sonic Boom" on the last U.S trek. look at how much of a surprise "Unplugged" was... Most "old school" KISS fans that I talk with would pay to see "The Elder" performed but are hesitant to fork out any more cash to see the same ol song and dance of the past three or four tours. I think it would work, the only problem may be Paul's vocals ? At least playing "The Elder" would take them a notch above being just a greatest hits touring outfit. Just my .o2 worth!

They don't want to do that stuff though. It's been addressed. They say they appreciate that people want to hear the obscure stuff but the majority of folks want the hits and classics so that's what they play. Basically their stance is that those songs and albums weren't popular for a reason so why play them now?

I can understand that but I think at this point *most* people who are going to KISS shows have been KISS fans for decades and probably would be willing to go without the virtually unchanged set list they've been playing since '96, at least for a little while. It's called the KISS Army for a reason, if you come, they will buy.

Speaking as a long-time KISS fan ,I would love to see them perform the Elder in it's entirety. I've missed KISS the last 2 times they've been in my area (would have gone but can't find anyone to go and I'm not going alone) but for that I'd do it. That show would be awesome!

when Sonic boom came out I didnt really give Kiss the time of day and Walmart didnt help. My super duper wally world didnt have a display at all - just the new cd. I heard some other stores had the full blown merch section though. It was strange for it to be so varied by location. I almost think WM wasnt sure how well the new cd was going to go over, unlike the expectations they had for AC/DC.

I'm so surprised, that a "pretend Kiss", with stand-ins for Ace & Peter didn't light the charts on fire. They should have stopped after that reunion tour in 2000.

I think they should be jumping up and down for joy that they sold 450,000 copies, that's about double what I guessed they would sell.

I was a proud member of the Kiss Army (when I was 7), a begrudging fan from 1979 until around 1985, then basically embarrassed to admit I ever listened to them since.

I still admire their business model, damn impressive. But they hit their musical peak in 1975.
