PostSubject: Dust Bolt killed last night   Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:42 am

Yesterday Sepultura/Dust Bolt/Warbringer were in town. I am not much into Sepultura anymore, but the concert was for free. So me and a friend went there, but mostly for Warbringer.
Warbringer were great, only the sound was very bad. The club is famous for its bad sound. Nevertheless everyone had fun, a big pit in the middle. Everyone was chanting Warbringer, Warbringer ... . I never ever heard of Dust Bolt so I had no expectations. Suddenly the sound was very good, the band had looots of energy, good sound, riffs, some great melodies ... . Dust Bolt played their ass off. The energy was massiv. One of my best concert experience ever.
Than Sepultura. It was a mix between great parts and boring parts. Near the end, when thy played songs like Arise the club nearly exploded though.
In the end it was a great concert.

That should tell the band something, especially if it happens like that at nearly every show. The fans want that style. Seems to me that it should tell them something, at least.

It tells them that their fans are hopelessly stuck in the past.

Ha! Since I haven't heard any newer Sepultura, I can't say what it sounds like. But if it's similar to Roots, then the answer to your comment is that the fans don't want boring, breakdown-filled nu-metal infused with death metal heaviness, which is exactly the reason why I don't know what anything newer than Roots sounds like. There was no motivation to check it out.

Dust Bolt is a good band, judging from what I've heard. Worth checking out for sure.

So you are making an assumption about a band that you haven't actually heard in 16 years. Laughing very hard

Laughing

That's why I said I can't say what the newer stuff sounds like...because I haven't heard it. Then I said if...IF...it sounds similar to Roots, which I've heard (and to give credit where it's due, Roots is a decent album, for what it is. Just not nearly as good as their prior work, IMO), then it's just more of that nu-metal kind of stuff, which I'm not into much at all. Apparently, judging from their reaction to the old material, neither are the fans.

Yes, I'm an old-schooler, and yes, I'm stuck in the past, if you want to call it that. But if so, then so are all the new thrash bands that are out, like Havok, Warbringer, Dust Bolt, newer Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Overkill, etc etc. because they all play that "stuck in the past" kind of thrash metal.

To answer the question, no, their new stuff is nothing like Roots. I guess you could say Against was kind of like Roots without the nu-metal, while their past three albums have all been much more in the thrash territory. No, they haven't recreated Arise, but they have brought back a lot of the aggression and speed

Dust bolt are truly an amazing thrash metal band. Among the best in the new wave of thrash metal. Got their latest in the mail last night. Awesome.

Sepultura have ignored the Arise-era and earlier for many years.

They'll only play Troops of Doom, and maybe half of a song from Beneath the Remains, and half of a song from Arise, in most cases. The only Max-era albums they seem to acknowledge are Chaos A.D. and Roots.

I could understand maybe not have more than half of the setlist be pre-Chaos A.D. stuff, but completely neglect or refuse to play it? Not wanting to be seen as a "nostalgia act" (a lot of bands seem to take this term as an insult) is one thing, but refusing to play the era the majority of the fans point to as their prime era is sad.

When was the last time they played "From the Past Comes the Storms", "Screams Behind the Shadows", or "Stronger Than Hate" in a live setting, anyway?
