If anyone cares, here's the 5 classic albums songwriting breakdown according to Allmusic.com. I don't have the CDs in front of me to verify, but here's how it fleshes out among 42 songs:

It looks like you don't have the DeGarmo/Tate collaborations. Here's the list going by the credits on Wikipedia, which is probably more accurate than Allmusic.

Yeah, your numbers look better...

It still shows Tate running neck & neck w/ DeGarmo in terms of how many times his name appears on a song credit.

Also, the 12 songs written by Tate/Wilton make you wonder WHY in the world they did not write more stuff like that after DeGarmo left.

Although the credits don't say who was responsible for the lyrics and who was responsible for the music. Given that Tate hasn't written anything on his own, I'm guessing that his contributions would have tended to be lyrics and vocal melodies.

Well, yeah...my only intention was to show how deeply the credits ran. Without those melodies, lyrics and ideas from Tate, the songs he contributed to would have been very different...regardless of whether he wrote a guitar part or not.

Case in point, "The Lady Wore Black" The vocal melody is what carries that tune and gives it the power that defines the song.

But how does anyone know Tate created those melodies? He may have simply crafted lyrics over melodies handed to him.

My only issue with Tate is his arrogance. When he discredits every other contributor to that band and insists he "wrote" all those songs, I call bullshit. Show me one song that Geoff Tate has ever written by himself.

Can he even play an instrument outside of the sax?

He plays keyboards.

Yeah, he's arrogant as hell.

We don't know that he did not just create lyrics over melodies that were given to him. He could also write vocals/melodies/lyric ideas with no music at all and have guys put music under them....I've done that.

Arrogance isn't the real issue, otherwise we'd hardly listen to music. Every lead singer is a prima donn. Razz

Trying to deduce what Tate did or did not contribute to the songwriting in Queensryche is asinine, unless you were there when they wrote the songs there is no way to know.

comparative selection is a place to start. By looking at what he didn't do, not much of a stretch to "deduce" anything one way or another.

Sometimes you seem to assume people who have written songs in a band situation are stupid or something ? Commo sense goes a long. long way.

offtopic

The arena DJ was playing Is There Anybody Listening? in Minnesota during the NHL game tonight. You do hear a fair amount of classic heavy metal at hockey games, but I didn't think Queensryche was among the bands getting played though.

By saying it's asinine to deduce what Geoff did or didn't write in QR. Of course, I wasn't there...but being that Geoff never wrote an entire QR song by himself. I'd wager he's never written any music for Queensryche. I have been in a band or two over the years and it's my experience that if a vocalist writes music at all, they have some songs written solely by them and them alone. Call it law of averages with a dash of common sense ?

If I am being an @$$ about it, my apologies.

That's my thing. Aside from "Convict," which contains no music and is only 8 seconds long, there isn't a single song attributed solely to Geoff Tate. After 30 years, one would assume there should be.

His contributions to such great albums shouldn't be discredited, of course, but when he's running around claiming to be the main songwriter in a band where he literally has no sole songwriting credits, one has to question his sanity.

You're not being an @$$...but you're also not entirely accurate. I'm a singer and have been for 25 years. I've written music, but only parts in a contributory fashion...not entire, arranged songs.

Steve Clark never wrote an entire song by himself either...but his contribution to Def Leppard was huge.

I've yet to read an interview with you stating you were/are the "main" songwriter in a band either. Steve Clark is a guitar player, so that changes that dynamic. I know I am not entirely correct. Just trying to show Shawn that it's not asinine to deduce something when you can look at what wasn't done "EVER" to make an assumption.

Fair enough. My only thing was not all major contributors write full songs on their own. Some do, some don't. If you co-write over half of a band's material then you're a major contributor.

On another board I frequent one of the members was scheduled to interview Geoff Tate and asked us to submit some questions for him. The interview happened and one of my questions was "sort-of" answered...

My original question was this:

Q: Do you think having 2 completely different lineups touring as "Queensryche" and both releasing albums under that name within a couple months of each other hurts the overall reputation of the band? Aren't you concerned with alienating your fans even further?

This question was then shortened to this:
Q: How do you think Queensryche fans will be able to keep up with 2 completely different lineups touring as Queensryche and both releasing albums under the same name?

Tate's response:

GT: I don’t know. I don’t even presume to be able to answer that. I suppose it will just require a little bit of research on the internet to see which version is playing where and which album is being released when. These days people are pretty educated when it comes to the internet they know how to use it and find out information so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

I wish the dude has just asked the original version of my question.

I saw them 1987, 1988 roundabout then or close to in this tiny hall called the SFX, a real dive in scumbgasville. Anyhoo, I'm right by the monitor when Geoff hits that high note in Queen Of The Reich, practically blew my eardrums out. What a singer.

Misquote me will you? After I punch you, spit on you and mock you publicly I will serve notice that you are being sued and I wrote the original quote, I own it and you have to pay me any monies you have made off your misquoted quote.
