A Blabbermouth comment...

Quote :
Although I still suffer from some lingering fears and insecurities, last night I managed to gird my loins and attend a Queensryche show. Geoff Tate and his "super group" of "all stars" were as advertised -- each and every guitar strum note was perfection, and the singing was a rapturous ecstasy unlike anything I have ever experienced.

But what made the night truly something special was the "meet and greet" that took place at the conclusion of the concert. Plucked from the audience by a burly member of Tate's security team, I was escorted "back stage". And what I saw stopped by heart.

The room was quite large and the walls were lined with bottle after bottle of vintage Insania. Velvet rugs covered the floor and thin, satin sheets hung from the ceiling. Incense burned at key locations in the room. It was breathtaking.

And then Tate himself appeared like a dream, the smoke from the incense swirling around him in dramatic fashion. He smiled and shook my hand and signed the trinkets and memorabilia that I carried with me. He then offered me a glass of wine. Oh the joy!

My only regret is that the night had to end, but before it did, Kelly Gray took me to his private kitchen where he offered me a brownie that was baked from an old family recipe. And as he held the pan, I looked at his oven mitts and wept…oh those hands, those glorious hands…
lol!
so The Geoff is back to writing lyrics again Smile

He loves taking credit for Silent Lucidity...but it's a Chris DeGarmo composition.

That's the hilarious part. Sole writing credit goes to DeGarmo. If you're trying to rewrite history, at least choose a song you have a writing credit on.

I would love it if DeGarmo came out and put Geoff in his place.

At the risk of defending Geoff, I don't think he was trying to take credit for "writing" SL. DeGarmo wrote it 100%, but I am sure that when it was recorded, GT was given some room to feel out the lyrics and the phrasing and make it comfortable for him. That's normal. Nothing I've ever recorded that was written 100% by someone else has come out 100% the way it was originally given to me.

It's also normal for it to change over time because, like he said, it's usually written then recorded...not played live a lot if at all. The more you play a song live, it'll evolve.

Yep... but he won't, he seems to be staying out of the public light on this one.

Also noticed this little "gem" in the interview:

Why is it important to you to keep that name?

Well for me, it’s my life’s work. It’s…what you hear when you listen to a Queensr˙che record is my ideas. My hopes, my dreams, my fears, my fantasies — all the stuff that is me is in those records and those songs. I’ve worked tirelessly over the years to protect the name, to bring value to the name, and I just can’t give it up. It’s me. It’s who I am.

SD's is right, Tate has said in many an interview 'When I wrote Silent Lucidity"

Maybe, but he's also said that he didn't write it.

Quote :
Songfacts: I guess the most popular QUEENSRźCHE song is "Silent Lucidity".

Geoff: Well, it's a song that was a Top Ten radio hit, so it has a lot of popularity, yeah.

Songfacts: You weren't a writer on that one, were you?

Geoff: Correct. I didn't write that song.

I'm not quite sure why I'm defending him though, other than out of a pedantic desire to get the facts right.

Oh, I totally get how songs evolve in studio and after. This is more about Geoff's constant referral to how he writes songs. Yeah, lyrics and melody play a big part, and sometimes those two things dictate how the music must be; but when he has a 30-year career and hasn't got a single sole songwriting credit, I can't help but scoff at his constant talk of "writing songs."

He does write songs. That cannot be debated. He may not write the music part...but he does write the lyric/melody part...which is equally, if not sometimes more, important.

For obvious reasons, I take a slight bit of personal offense at the idea that people who don't string together chord progressions on a musical instrument, yet contribute the theme, subject, melodic and lyrical content of a song, are not songwriters.

The whole narrative here is that Geoff is always 100% in the wrong and the rest of the guys are always 100% in the right. When you see that at play in something this trivial, it's easier to understand our political process.

i am not sure everyone in this thread thinks The Geoff is 100% in the wrong. I have even seen some decent reviews of his last album here.

Context matters here, though. Lyrics and melodies are indeed a very important component to songwriting, but most vocalists/lyricists don't go running around insisting those songs are their creations. It's always "my songs" with Geoff Tate. So yeah, it's laughable.

Except that's not the case here at all. Unless you're just making assumptions without reading. Which also makes understand our political process easier.

That's one of those things where it's a case of perspective.

For example, on one hand, I'd be perfectly within my rights to say a songs that I wrote all the lyrics & vocal melodies for is "my song" even though it's obvious I co-wrote it with someone else and the implication is "our song"...especially if the lyrics/melody were written first and music was constructed around it.

Personally, I don't feel comfortable saying it that way. However, I am still a songwriter.

No, it's May 2014. There's still time!! How about a mass Heart of Metal road trip to this show? Maybe we can meet Geoff afterwards and show him how much we, ummm, "appreciate" his work.
