Re-buy Geoff Taint's last album. Now 20% douchier. Razz

Quote :
"Frequency Unknown", the only album released the Geoff Tate-fronted version of QUEENSRŸCHE following his dismissal from the band featuring guitarists Michael Wilton and Parker Lundgren, bassist Eddie Jackson and drummer Scott Rockenfield, arrived in April 2013 amidst a swarm of controversy. The group had just split in two, with Tate leading an all-new group of musicians while the remaining members of QUEENSRŸCHE carried on with a new vocalist, Todd La Torre.

Tate's version of QUEENSRŸCHE included longtime associate Kelly Gray plus former QUIET RIOT and OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Rudy Sarzo and legendary AC/DC/DIO drummer Simon Wright. This group quickly recorded and released "Frequency Unknown", and though the album earned some praise from critics, complaints began to surface about the quality of the album's mix. In response, Cleopatra Records commissioned multi-instrumentalist and producer Billy Sherwood (of YES) to remix the entire album. However, due to schedule restrictions, Sherwood was never able to complete his mix... until now.

Cleopatra, in association with Deadline Music, proudly announces a whole new "Frequency". Coming November 4, a special limited-edition deluxe reissue of "Frequency Unknown" will be released. Packaged in a striking 2CD digipak, the deluxe edition includes the original album plus a full-length bonus disc of Sherwood's complete reimagining of the album. Many of the songs were rearranged almost from scratch, with Sherwood adding orchestral arrangements and his own unique spin on these compositions.

"Frequency Unknown - Deluxe Edition" track listing:

02. Dare
03. Give It To You

05. In The Hands Of God

10. The Weight Of The World

Bonus Tracks (2013 Versions)

14. Silent Lucidity

Disc 2 (Billy Sherwood's Mix)

01. Cold
02. Dare
03. Give It To You
04. Slave
05. In The Hands Of God
06. Running Backwards
07. Life Without You

Wait a tick? Is that re-mix album the one he was giving away for free?

Not for nothin' but I sent away for that "free, remixed" version that they were offering... and I swear to God, I couldn't tell the difference between it and the "original" store-bought one. I even played both discs one right after the other (which was a feat of serious intestinal fortitude in and of itself) and if one was a "remix," then my ears weren't well trained enough to detect it.

The remixed version has a thicker bottom end. That, to my ears, is the biggest difference. It also removed the worst notes Tate has ever sung on tape at the beginning of "Give It To You." So out of key!

All the suck is still present, though.

(shrugs) If you say so. Maybe they just sent me another copy of the un-remixed version by mistake Laughing

I already have this material as I got FU as a gift (should I reconsider the strength of that friendship?) and also got the free remix disc.

I was probably in the minority who felt that the remix actually improved the quality of the album - giving better instrument separation and a little bit of punch (as well as odd choices like not censoring the pseudo-rap in "Dare").

It wasn't a bad album, but it wasn't anything special either.

There are some decent songs, and one great song, but much of it is shit.

Well I don't think it's "shit" at all.

Like I've said before, the songs I like on FU I actually like more than the songs I like on Todd-Ryche.

Tate, even in his severely diminished glory, still has a charisma and vocally inhabits songs in a way Todd hasn't quite gotten to.

The comparison I'd use is Phil Collins on Trick of the Tail vs. Duke and onwards.  He may have sung well on the early stuff, but he never sounded INVESTED in any of it.  Later on, it sounded like he was singing from his heart even if the lyrics weren't his.

Tate's voice may be bombed worse than Berlin 1945, but he can still sound like he gives a crap when he opens his mouth.  Granted, he could wait for better material and lay off the wine a bit, but he sounds like he's into what he's doing.  Todd sounds a bit more like a talented technician who knows how to hit the notes.

Not to excuse Tate's behavior or downplay Todd, but it's a comparison worth making.

Todd seems to be singing the old songs less like Tate these days and more like as if he was the original vocalist. It's more genuine, less imitation. As such, he sounds stronger, more confident, you know.

As for comparing FU to QR 2014, I still don't think anything on FU, besides "The Weight of the World," comes close to songs like "In This Light," "A World Without," and "Open Road," all of which I think are fantastic.

I've been of the mind for a while that I'm holding out to see what the QR guys do next before making a final decision on them.

For my money at present though, FU is a well-performed album of mostly forgettable and even a few outright BAD songs (Weight of the World being a notable exception). QR2014 is a well-performed album of fair-to-middlin' songs. I think "In This Light" may be the only track that really grips me in any meaningful way. The rest are just background noise to me and that's never been how I approached even the TateRhyche albums (barring Dedicated to Chaos, which I would have dedicated to the trashbin if the copy I heard hadn't been from the library).

I think FU is really bland. The S.T is not the best album they have done but it is better than FU.

Geoff answers the question noone in their right mind wants to happen...

Quote :
Asked if he would consider a return to QUEENSRŸCHE if the opportunity to rejoin the band ever arose, Tate said: "No. You know, there's a spirit of the deal. When you… How do I put it?... When you betray somebody so badly, when you hurt them so badly, it's really hard for the other person to forgive to the extent where, 'Hey, everything is fine. Let's make music.' Making music is very personal. You just don't… you just don't do that with everybody. You can't."

Geoff went on to joke that he might be open to reuniting with his former bandmates "if the money was good," before adding: "At this point in my life, it's not worth that enough to go through the toxic vibe."

The guy is such a dope. Like I said in the comments there...

"...so I've led the band and pushed and pulled and cajoled and bribed and tried to get everyone on the same page for all these years to keep the integrity of the band intact and to keep moving ahead with our vision for what the band was..."

If you have to do all those things, there is no "our" vision.

Someone needs to tell Geoff they don't want him back. They have been more successful than VestShit and don't need him. Hell, they've been more successful than they have been during Tate's later years with the band. And putting out much better music than the last 15+ with Tate!
