Man dude, you're having a rough go with the job field. Don't give up.

I won't, but you're right about the job field. Up until a year and a half ago, I always left jobs on my own terms. Now I've had 5 jobs that ended on someone elses. First was beyond my control (unfortunate mistakes), second was because I screwed up (mistakes that could have been avoided), third was beyond my control (budget cuts), fourth was because I couldn't control my temper, and now this one beyond my control (note enough work, I'm assuming).

With 3 of those being auto jobs, I might just have to face the fact that the automotive field isn't for me. I hate that I still have 20K of student loans to pay off for a career that might just not be in the cards (and all the tools that go with it) but that's how it is. I really don't want the solitary life of a truck driver but it may just be the best thing for me. As long as I'm working for $10-12 an hour I will continue to live paycheck to paycheck, always on the edge. Short of winning the lottery or Publisher's Clearing House, the only real way I see me having any financial security is to become a trucker.

I am sorry to hear this. I hope something comes quickly and pays a good amount. Have you thought of going to see what kind of training services you might be eligible for?

Not much is offered unless you're employed by a dealership. My dad suggested that if I do get another $10-12 an hour jobs I might need to do schooling in another field, providing I can find some finanical assistance. The last part is hard because unless you're a minority race, woman, or over 50, there isn't much in the way of tuition assistance or grants (unfortunatly, my G.I. Bill has been used up).

What about the oil change places? Not glamorous work and you start at sub par pay but if you work hard and stick around you can move up. I've worked at one before and I know squat about cars and I could've trained to be assistant manager.

He's already been fired from that gig. Dontcha remember the whole oil plug fiasco?

DB, have you ever thought about contruction work? You can drive a truck or work heavy machinery and still come home at the end of the day. No over-the-road stuff.

Yes, but most of those require a year or two of experience and a CDL (training of wich would cost me too much money without corporate support). I'd have to do over-the-road for a few years before I could do local gigs. 1-2 years isn't asking too much from me, but I would rather not have to give up that much (if I was several years younger, it's be different-but I'm tired of the solitary life I've had for too long now and the prospect of another year or so of that is not very attractive). However, I will if there is no other way.

I could try some oil change places, as I don't mention the drain plug stuff. I found out that in Texas, by law a company can only verify that you worked for another company during a specific time period, they can't give detail on your dissmisal. When I applied for Bob's, I said I was layed off from Bankston Honda. The problem is that so few of those places are willing to hire you without at least one year of experience. I was hoping I would have been at Bob's long enough to give me that but it just wasn't going to happen. I just can't help but feel that maybe I'm just not meant to be in the automotive field with all the bad luck I've had since graduating from automotive school.

My bad. I was mistaken. I thought you had a CDL already.
