^^ Good to hear your lights are back on, Macho... gives me some hope that they're workin' their way up to us country bumpkins in the Northern boonies. Very Happy

got you. I put 3 bags of ice on the fridge, and the food lasted all this time. i have 1 year old and one 6 year old on the house, thankfully we bought 4 gallons of milk, 2 dozens od eggs, plenty of bread, and yogurt for the kids a day before the storm, so we haven't gone out to buy food. The problem will be when tomorrow or the day after to go find more food, since the price of everything went up and we are running out of it, and the supermarkets are empty. Also there is only one gas station open in 90 blocks around my area.

Yeah, I hear ya. We had to chuck almost everything in our fridge yesterday - there were still a few things in the freezer that were, amazingly, still frozen solid - I guess cuz they were at the bottom surrounded by other things. We can't cook any of it without power though. We are now regretting the decision we made when we first moved into the house to replace the gas range with an electric stove (D'oh!)....

If nothin' happens soon, we'll be finding out how long we can survive on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.

Keith, I'm glad to hear that you and your family are okay, though it certainly sucks that you're having to deal with the remnants of Mother Nature's latest destruction. I hope somehow that your family can experience some degree of normalcy in the coming days.

PostSubject: Re: Hurricane Sandy   Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:03 am

Hi all... Hurricane Sandy is still f**kin' with my life, but at least things seem to be heading in the right direction.

I still don't have power at my house but a member of our church who got his power back early Sunday morning graciously offered to loan us his generator for the duration, so we hooked that up yesterday afternoon. To conserve the gasoline we ran it for a couple of hours in the afternoon to get the house warmed up, then shut it down for a while, then ran it again for a while in the evening to get the place warmed up again before bed. We were even able to watch some TV for a while when it was running, wonder of wonders, and once we got the hot water and well pump up and running I was finally able to take a hot shower... and after nearly a week without one, I swear to you folks, that shower was better than cheeseburgers, pizza, beer and sex!

Our church continues to provide a warm place to hang out and hot food at meal times. It's humbling, but it's also comforting to see there are still many other people around town who are in the same boat as us. I was starting to feel like a mooch after so many days but our pastor assured me that "Don't you dare feel guilty, this is what we're here for," which damn near made me cry.

After spending two and a half hours in line at a gas station yesterday I was able to fill up my truck so I'm good till later in the week. New Jersey has established "odd" and "even" days at gas stations (if your license plate ends in an "even" # you can get gas on even numbered days, and odd #'d plates can go on odd #'d days).

I have also decree'd that I will not shave until the power comes back on. I've already got a pretty good Mountain Man thing happening so if current estimates for return of service (mid-week) hold true, I should have a full-on Charles Manson combo goin' by the time the juice comes back on.

Thanks again for all the well wishes, and I can't wait till things get back to normal so I can get back to nit-pickin' about geeky obsessive Metal stuff.

Stories like that make even a jaded cynical, prick like myself feel good about humanity once in awhile. Glad to hear things are slowly starting to turn around for you Freddy.

Glad to hear my "Yankee" friends are ok. My uncle near Lancaster PA didn't even lose a tree limb but had no power for about 5 days. Luckily I was able to get his genny running when I was there last month & he filled 5 cans of gas a few days before. He ran it about 6 hours a day to keep the food cold & watch TV! Being from the hurricane magnet of Louisiana i can tell you, a generator is your best friend around here. You can get dual or tri fuel models that will run on Natural gas, Propane or gasoline. they are a little more expensive but well worth it when you can't get gasoline.

Good day, eh, and welcome to day Number 10 without power in the Great White North (aka New Jersey).

Situation still hasn't changed for us, still no power, still hangin' at the church for meals and keeping the house somewhat warm via generator when we're home. Yesterday's "nor'easter" storm just added insult to injury, it dumped about 3 inches of snow on us and the temperature dropped into the 20s. I spent Tuesday night prior to the storm in my back yard trying to set up some kind of "shelter" for the generator so that it wouldn't get damaged by the weather. My friend and I parked it next to the RV trailer in my backyard and set up a little "tent" over it with a tarp so that it could keep running and still be safe from the elements. Around 7 PM last night (when the snow/wind was at its height) the weight of the snow on the tarp caused a couple of the ropes holding it up to snap, so I had to go out there and redneck-fix it back up again (there was much cursing), fortunately my repair job held for the rest of the night. It was clear again this morning so I was able to uncover it and return to business as usual.

Last we checked with our utility company, the juice is due to come back on in my neighborhood by 11 PM tonight.... but that was before yesterday's storm, I dearly hope that didn't set the timetable back any further.

On the other hand, I am now able to keep my beer cold via natural refrigeration just by leaving it outside. Very Happy

We've had enough and simply want this nonsense to be over!!

It's always darkest before the dawn. Or look on the bright side of life. Don't eat the yellow snow? Something like that. I dunno. I was never good with inspirational words of wisdom.

Hang in there, dude.

The power is back on! Halle-freakin'-loo-yah!!!

My wife texted me at about 4:30 this afternoon with the good news and I practically did a happy dance right there at my desk.

The house looks like hell after nine and a half days in the dark but cleaning up can wait. I just want to bask in the joy of electricity for a while!

Thanx DB. Gonna be a busy weekend getting the house & yard whipped back into shape - it looks like a tribe of Cavemen have been camping in the living room for the last nine and a half days, and there's a ton of laundry but it's fine, we'll get it done.

I'm just so happy that I'm able to sit comfortably in my house and watch a damn movie!! The storm totally F'd up the tail end of my annual personal "Schlock-Tober" horror marathon, so I've got some catching up to do. Very Happy
