Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Downey Jr is great as always in this thriller/comedy/mystery about a small-time crook who gets mistaken for an actor. Quick fire dialogue, a strong cast and lots of plot twists make it a mystery why it wasn't more successful!

"Dredd" (2012)

In this gritty reboot of the Judge Dredd character (last seen in 1995 as played by Sly Stallone), the futuristic lawman is breaking in a new rookie partner. As they carry out their duties they wind up sealed inside a massive "city block" skyscraper that's ruled by a sadistic drug lord, and have to fight their way out through an armada of drugged out, armed-to-the-teeth psychos. Yep, that's the whole plot. Naturally, lotsa shooting, stuff blowing up, and general brutal mayhem follows.

On the downside, "Dredd" is nowhere near as elaborate as the Stallone film (which was kinda disappointing -- cuz even though the Stallone version had its share of faults it was a great looking movie!) but on the other hand, Karl Urban's deadpan portrayal of the character is more true to the comic series. As an added bonus, there's no Rob Schneider in this one.

Dredd's a cool character and in the right hands he could make a truly bad-ass movie, but the Stallone flick blew it and this one doesn't quite make the cut either. "Dredd" is enjoyable in a "B" movie sort of way, but it still falls frustratingly short of the mark.

The Hunger Games (2012)

Entertaining big budget variation on The Most Dangerous Game/Lord Of The Flies/The Running Man, etc. Much better than I expected.

Ted: Hilariously funny! Wasn't able to watch the unrated version as rental DVDs have that function disabled (as was the bonus features) Rolling Eyes . But of course, the movie was raunchy enough as it is so it was probably for the best.

Coincidentally I finished Battle Royale today. I haven't seen Hunger Games but it strikes me as a toned down version of BR.

I thought the same thing when I first heard of "Hunger Games," that it was a bite off of "Battle Royale."

However, the woman who wrote the "Hunger Games" novels swears up and down that she had never even heard of "Battle Royale" until her books were published.

Regardless of whether Battle Royale or Hunger Games came first it is not even remotely a "new" story idea, film variations on this have been around since the 1930s. When dealing with a well-worn "high concept" idea it all depends on how well you pull it off.

I liked the film and didn't really expect to, it was handled much more intelligently than I anticipated. Jennifer Lawrence is impressive.

I liked it too - Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress and the film would not of been as good without her in the role. I look forward to next one!

I never saw Battle Royale but I do have it in my netflix queue.

She was brilliant in Silver Linings Playbook, she won the Golden Globe last night and I'm hoping she gets the Oscar as well. Quite a talent.

"South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" (1999)

Parental outrage over the smutty antics of Canadian comics Terrance and Philip cause the U.S. to declare war on Canada, and Stan, Kyle, Cartman and the gang are caught in the middle. Just to make things even worse, Satan and his lover Saddam Hussein are waiting in the wings to take over the Earth unless the kids can stop it.

This feature length musical version of the Comedy Central 'toon is bizarre, tasteless, twisted, profane, and occasionally disgusting, but still totally hilarious all the way through.

Django Unchained (2012)

Tarantino's supremely entertaining revenge fantasy is easily one of his best films. Told in a straight linear fashion it's less flashy than his prior films, but he proves he doesn't need the tricks to tell an engaging story. Excellent pacing (2 1/2 hours breezes by), fantastic cinematography and one of his most impressive casts to date make this one a real winner. But don't worry, he hasn't mellowed with age, buckets of blood flow in the final reel. Bravo.
