I should say I don't think it'll be a bad film at all. In fact, Koepp, as uneven as he is, can write and entertaining script, even if he is just co-writing. And as odd a choice as it is, Branagh is excellent at coherency; I doubt he'll go all shaky cam on us (hopefully). Chris Pine is also a good choice for Ryan.

It's just strange, is all. I'm glad to hear they're keeping him as an analyst (I had read a bunch of buzz that they changing him to a field operative pure and straight). But why not choose a book such as Red Rabbit or Executive Decision (my favorite; ridiculous that they haven't adapted this yet). Why go out of the way to come up with something that doesn't even need the Jack Ryan tag in the first place?

Joker, you're dead on about the ghost writer deal. I'm positive it'll turn out that way. Then there will be Clancy's nephew or something teaming up with three or four other unknown authors releasing a new Jack Ryan book a year for the next decade lol.

Anybody seen the trailer for Dario Argento's "Dracula 3D" (which received a limited release in America via IFC Midnight this past week) yet? Good Lord, it looks atrocious. I've seen better CG in movies from The Asylum.

Sooooo... Dracula can turn into a giant praying mantis now? Ooooookay.

I think Unca Dario is slippin' in his old age. Laughing very hard

It got pretty poor reviews. Most are saying that you couldn't even distinguish this as an Argento film; none of his wild theatrics and stylized violence is present. A shame.

There are a ton of films scheduled to come out this month as the studios will start rushing anything remotely Oscar-worthy into theaters so they will be eligible for the Academy Awards.

Some of the front-runners for awards contention are:

Inside Llewelyn Davis - the latest film from the Coen Brothers.

American Hustle - David O. Russell's next film after Silver Linings Playbook is getting excellent reviews and has a good chance of mainstream success as well considering the primarily comical approach and the incredible cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. The film has already won the New York Film Critics Circle for Best Picture.

Saving Mr. Banks - Tom Hanks plays the legendary Walt Disney in this biopic.

Her - Spike Jonze tells the story about a man who falls in love with his operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). The film has already won the best picture award from the National Board of Review.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Ben Stiller stars in this massive-budget update of the old Danny Kaye film, whether the critics will take it seriously remains to be seen.

A few smaller independent films with good word-of-mouth are August: Osage County (starring Julia Roberts), Labor Day (starring Kate Winslet) and The Invisible Woman (starring Felicity Jones). These titles are doubtful to get best picture nominations but will all 3 likely get acting nominations.

Other films opening this month for mainstream audiences include: Anchorman 2, 47 Ronin, Grudge Match and Walking With Dinosaurs…though none of these titles are likely to garner any nominations.

^^Looking forward to all of these, except I'm a little bewildered about Saving Mr. Banks. Some thoughts:

-Tom Hanks looks nothing and sounds nothing like Walt Disney.
-I'll say that again: Tom Hanks looks nothing and sounds nothing like Walt Disney.
-The scenes in the trailer make poor light of the Sherman bros (and again the actors look nothing like them, nor do they act like them). Hoping they're not caricaturized.
-On Hancock's direction: this could either go really pedestrian or kind of good.
-The movie is being marketed as a feel-good flick, but everyone who follows Disney lore knows that Travers was horrified by the final cut and had nothing more to do with Disney. Soooo...

What will be remains to be seen, however.
