PostSubject: The Coral   Wed Feb 06, 2013 6:03 am

As mentioned here before, I'm a huge fan of The Coral. They've been one of my favorite bands since I saw their first video on the Kerrang! TV channel when I lived in the UK.

That first video I saw, for the song "Skeleton Key," first fooled me into thinking it was a new Dead Milkmen tune. I'd heard it while I was in another room. I was bummed when I saw that it wasn't them, and almost changed the channel. Glad I didn't.

Clearly they are not metal in the least, nor hard rock or anything really close to it, and "Skeleton Key" is kind of an oddball track for them. Typically they play an old-school brand of 50s/60s pop psyche-rock, among other styles.

Listen to that last one. It's an unreleased demo. Tell me that doesn't sound it came right out of 1965.

Anyway, I was prompted to start this thread because their drummer, Ian Skelly, has a new album out. I figured if some of you dug The Coral, you'd dig his stuff.

More than likely you'll all just ignore this entire thread. Haha.

I just saw one of their albums in a local shop I was in over the weekend. I can't remember which one it was, but I recognized the band name because you mentioned them in another thread. Maybe the retro one.

I dunno. Those clips are ok I guess, but I don't know that it's something I'd listen to very often. Sounds to me like these guys are a little hit-and-miss.

I don't know. For me, they're one of those rare bands that has released very few things I didn't think were at least really good. Even their b-sides are great, and we're talking like 70 tracks.

They're definitely not for everyone, but...I don't know, I think they're brilliant.

Seriously kickin' tune from James Skelly's upcoming solo album:

These guys...man, they're so good.

Ian Skelly, drummer of The Coral, has his own solo album out. (I thought I posted about it here before. Guess not.) It's a great album, but very mellow, 60s psychadelic kind of stuff. Check this out:

Oh no! Rob's done it again! Razz

I like The Coral, really good band, the solo song is a bit blah and repetitive but catchy enough.

Based on some of your descriptions, these dudes sound like something I may dig. I can'y play youtube videos at work, but i will look into them.

Sometimes I'm a little suspect of some of your random music tastes...but I'm willing to give this band the benefit of the doubt.

I looked at this thread because when I saw the name The Coral, I was thinking of that pop group The Corrs that had that radio single "Breathless" and was curious what people here would be saying about something like that.

So...I guess The Coral recorded an album after The Invisible Invasion, but then, for whatever reason, never mixed and mastered the songs, instead writing what would become Roots and Echoes. So now they've dusted off those 12 tunes and plan to release it all on October 20. It's called The Curse of Love.

Sounds great, as usual! Can't wait. Love these guys.

One more new tune, an instrumental.

Oddly, this one reminds me of the old NES game Shadowgate.

Some of you might dig this. New band featuring the drummer for The Coral and the singer for The Zutons.

Considering the fact that I hated The Zutons with an absolute passion, I really wasn't expecting much from this, but I like it quite a lot. Naming yourself virtually the same thing as another Psch band from the '60s is a bit shoddy though

Pretty sure it's probably a little homage to them. Pretty much everything these guys do is an homage to that era. Ian, the Coral's drummer, toured his solo album under the name Ian Skelly & the Serpent Power, so I guess he just kept the name for this new project.

The Coral has a new album coming out in April. Here's the first video:

A hell of a lot more psychadelic than previous albums. I love it!
