Is anyone here a fan of Meat Loaf (no, not the food)? I really dig his bombastic rock sound myself, plus he's got some pretty good rocking songs

It's getting weird this! Meatloaf, like Status Quo was one of the artists that I loved as a child before moving on to heavier things. I still think that Bat Out of Hell is a good album that I play occasionally and the title track is a great song.

I also still have a soft spot for this one.

I love that song! I've always thought Dead Ringer was overlooked in the MeatLoaf catalog.

And I think a big part of why Meat Loaf is SO bombastic is Jim Steinman's songwriting.  I swear the guy can't write a song that's under 5 minutes long and it doesn't matter what artist is performing it.

From Bonnie Tyler ("Total Eclipse Of The Heart") to this one by Sisters Of Mercy, much like Bernie Taupin you can tell who wrote the song.

(BTW, this is the "single edit" of the song and it's still 4:57 long)

I like Meat Loaf, and I have to agree with you, Jim Steinman seems to not only think every song he writes has to be an epic, but also the production of any album his name is even remotely connected to features bombastic production that seems to throw everything into it, including the kitchen sink.

Also Steinman found the perfect vehicle for his songwriting in Meat Loaf, a large then life persona, with a larger then life voice.

I do believe I know only 2 songs of his so I don't have a very strong opinion on him. I do like Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

Every once in a while, I really want to hear a song of his, but more than a few tracks in his catalog start off strong and overstay their welcome by about 3 minutes or so.

No denying the power in the voice though. His role in the Rocky Horror Picture Show is still awesome.

I owned Bat Out of Hell on cassette tape many moons ago, but never bothered or cared to replace it. I did get to meet Mr. Loaf once after he sang the national anthem at a Phillies game. Seemed nice enough. He signed a napkin for me, which I've since lost.
