PostSubject: Black Metal (and next of kin) general discussion...   Tue Jan 06, 2015 7:21 pm

Sort of a follow-up to Ult's BM thread. That thread seems to have slowed down, but I wanted to get more feedback and insight...

It seems that I tend to like the genre-mixing bands or the ones that are "blackened" rather than pure, true Black Metal. I've dug into this thread pretty deeply (periodic BM phase) and the one I like the best - Naflgar - had lyrical content I couldn't live with, but they are wildly talented.

Borknagar is now on my "want" list.

I was excited to hear that Kentucky band, but they can't decide if they're Bluegrass or Black Metal, and in my opinion, don't join the two genres in a seamless way.

I like the faster and symphonic stuff and I like it when Viking/Pagan/Folk have some BM tendencies.

Whatever Immortal Souls is, I love that. Folkearth, Wintersun (Holy Smokes!!), Bal-Sagoth , Demonic Resurrection, Crom (Vengeance is a masterpiece), Antestor's - The Forsaken is just beautiful to me.

Whatever the above bands are considered, those are who I like. ANY suggestions similar to these bands would be welcome.

I also like the stuff that's not afraid to experiment but mostly the post BM, psychedelic, blackgaze type stuff rather than straight up Hail Satan! Kvlt trve nonsense. That said, my fairly recent interest in the genre has caused me to work my way back to older bands like Darkthrone, Burzum, Emperor and my favorites from the Norwegian scene Ulver.

I'm not sure what you want from this thread though as there are about five of us who remotely dig this kind of stuff on here and even OCI seems to have gone on a HoM holiday, so there's not likely to be much said on here that hasn't already been said.

Been listening to some Naglfar and they are okay. i wish i hadn't watched the video though as cartoonish eeeeeviiiil!! isn't really my thing.

Okay, as this is a new thread, I'll take this opportunity to talk about one massively under rated guy in the BM scene and that guy is Tim Yatras. Tim is a prolific guy and between 2007 and now his bands have included

Lord
Austere
Grey Waters
Nazxul
Woods of Desolation
Germ
Autumns Dawn

and collaborated or contributed to

Battalion
Dungeon
Illium
Blackened Angel
Thy Light
Skyforest

In addition, he is a producer/engineer

Yup, this is a guy that likes to keep busy! lol! (This is also not the gig that pays the bills, for that he writes J Pop and K Pop songs!!)

His stuff is incredibly diverse and yet alway manages to sound like him.I think he's awesome!

I am green to this stuff but am testing the waters (Lots of varied blackish metal bands)

So far I dig on One Man's Child, Kalmah, Veles, Dark Forest, Evilfeast, Agollach, Eluveitie, Finntroll, Soul Embraced, Aes Dana, Disarmonia Mundi, Mors Principium Est, Insomnium, Abysmal Dawn, Melechesh, Falkenbach, Summoning, Mistur, Samael, The Sins Of Thy Beloved, Bornholm, Fjorsvartnir, Graveworm, Catemania, and Einherjer.

I have no clue what flavor of black they nor do I give a crap. I just like it for various reasons.

If Falkenbach and Summoning are doing it for you, you should definitely without doubt check out Gallowbraid, such a great band! Ashen Eidolon would probably be in my top 20 records of the millenium so far.

As everyone knows I'm not a fan of most "growling" bands but I do like some. Falkenbach, Elvenking and Korpiklaani. And this band, Hollenthon:

Cool to see Falkenbach fans here. I don't every remember the band (only 1 member really) mentioned here. Also I would recommend Windir:

I would recommend Summoning almost every time. So many different styles being mixed together - can't pin down exactly what they do musically, but it's great.

Darkspace are also worth checking out. One band that can mix industrial, Science Fiction and Black Metal in one foul mess (in a good way mind you).

Who knew black metal could be so damn catchy?!

This entire album is awesome (as are the two that precede it).

No love for National Socialist Black Metal? Man, that stuff will change your life. I had the scales lifted from my eyes truly understanding the accomplishments and powers of the white man. Also, no other bands are so blatant about burning churches or killing people with a sword! That's VERY smart music there!

In Times made my Top 10 for 2015....and I don't even listen to black metal. Very Happy

This one is my favorite track:

Just a killer composition that demonstrates their ability to mix beauty and brutality together. They spark my interest in a similar way that Opeth did when I first discovered them.

Man, I like that one even better than the other song. This has moved near the top of my want list.

Here's another black/thrash band (w/progressive influences) - Absu.

All of their lyrics deal with Mesopotamian, Celtic, and Sumerian mythologies; with heavy emphasis on magick.

If you like blackened death/thrash in the vein of Dissection, Necrophobic, Dismember, early Edge of Sanity, Bal-Sagoth, this one is for you!
