The last Steel Panther thread was from 3 years ago.  Starting a new one.

There have been a few that have come before - Big Cock, Satanacide, Blessed By a Broken Heart, etc.  But Steel Panther has nailed this niche and sells out every single show, twice over!  Do you believe that SP is a real force?  Or no?  [yes, I am proud Ralph Seanz is from Minneapolis - remember the Atomic Punks??]

They can play like muthafuggas but their shtick got old fast. I had their first album for a while but the novelty wore off after about a dozen listens. To paraphrase Ralph Wiggum, they're "funny but not ha-ha funny."

I think the joke wears thin rather quickly myself, but I can see the appeal for both folks that were "there at the time" and get it, or from younger fans that want some of the fun "sex, drugs & rock n roll" attitude that today's music sorely lacks.

More power to 'em I say.

EDIT: I saw them live in LA when they were Metal Skool and they were a hoot and a half.

They are the epitome of a party band. Just clowns that joke around, but at the same time are seasoned pros that can play almost anything from a jukebox.

They're like Weird Al playing Hair Metal.

Yeah, just add in some ultra dirty language! There's no doubt that they are the premier rock/metal parody band in the world right now. Not that it's a crowded genre... Smile

I enjoy them but not enough to buy a whole album. I did buy their version of "Fantasy" tho, out of curiousity and it was pretty good.

I saw them open for Priest last October. Like a lot of you said, it's okay for a while, but the shtick gets old kinda fast. After about half an hour there were quite a few boos and I kept hoping each song would be the last. They are obviously super talented and I sorta wish they would mix in a few legit songs that aren't over the top silly.

Bingo with that last sentence.  This band could be so much more if they took their craft more seriously.  But if you can sell out venues doing this style, who am I to tell them to change?

I am not crapping on them, as I know there are those here who really like them, but are they really selling out? Or are they opening for bigger names that help sell out? They were super appreciative of JP taking them out and they referenced this sincerely a few times that night; but that only started the booing as people were reminded of why they were really there. I could have been at the stage for their set like I was for Priest as my cousin is a casino host there, but I chose not to. I wasn't a fan going in and the over the top sex songs and banter about genital warts and such didn't make me one.

I'd like to see them live, for sure. But as for listening to the records, After about 5 or 6 listens, Feel the Steel got old, because of the lyrics. Musically, it is spot on and excellent. But I can only listen to the same stand-up but so many times, especially when all the jokes are the same just worded differently.

I know SP cannot just now start writing serious songs. It'd take away the novelty that makes them sell out the shows, as mentioned. People who don't care about this genre at all like and go see SP, because of the joke.

So to that end, I think it'd be cool if SP became a side project and the dudes re-named themselves and wrote the same excellent music, but with more straightforward lyrics. The party/sleaze can still be there, of course. And then they can play shows as SP whenever they feel like it, and maybe record an EP here or there with some jokey songs and covers.

All that said, I do still crack up every time I see the singer and Sarah Silverman having their "death to all butt metal" exchange.

I like the approach that Wig Wam and Hansel have taken. Slightly tongue in cheek, they don't take themselves too seriously, but they aren't a total parody.

Though I have not seen them live, I dig their on stage banter (YouTube clips) or interviews more than the music. It's like This Is Spinal Tap. Though I dig the music, it's not what makes me laugh, it's everything else. Steel Panther is basically the live version of Spinal Tap. There humor is totally misogynistic, teenage, goofball humor, but somehow it strikes a chord with me. They've obviously tapped into something.

Stupid parody band. Even Spinal Tap doesn't think they are funny.

I found their first album amusing and I liked Danger Kitty. What's not to like about an over-the-top glam parody band? Their pairing with Judas Priest on the latest tour was bizarre though.

Looks like Russ Parish(AKA Satchel or 'Rikki Ratchet') joined his old Kevin Gilbert band mates (Dave Kerzner and Nick D'Virgilio) for a song that is a tribute to KG!

BTW, it's prog. If you liked Dimensionaut by Sound Of Contact you will probably like this. SOC was Kerzners previous project.

Thought this was cool. Not really a Steel Panther fan at all, but I'm a fan of this kid drummer. I've been following this kid for years now, and he's a freak of nature. His first drum video he has posted was when he was four I believe. Now here he is six years later playing on stage with Steel Panther. Look him up and check out his many videos, it's fun watching him progress through the years.

I rather liked the first two albums but lost I interest after that. I did see them live a few times and they were really fun. This is probably one of their cleanest songs and one of my favorites..
