PostSubject: Finally Got A Job   Thu Mar 24, 2016 7:11 pm

Right before Christmas I posted that I had lost my promising job at Amazon. After months of searching I finally got one. It doesn't pay near as much, the benefits aren't much, and it may be a while before I can move up, but it's only 4-5 miles from where I live, I have weekends off, and I get off of work at 3:30. Also, It is a national company so there will be room for advancement if I get hired permanently. I'm going to be breaking down malfunctioning A/C units and salvaging the parts to go into other units.

Nothing glamorous, but I'm just glad to finally find something (especially one so close to home-I'll save a lot on gas and vehicle wear/tear). It's so exhausting looking for work. Applying for job after job, only getting interviews for 10% of them, then getting rejection letters/e-mails (sometimes without ever getting interviewed).

I hope this is the one that finally breaks my job losing streak. I'll just need to learn from previous mistakes and put everything I have into this.

Nice going DB!

I'll say one thing, I give you credit for always looking for a new job after you lose one.† Some people would be content to just try to live off a government dole but you at least try to "earn your keep" in society so kudos for that.

Good luck with the new job.

I agree with Toho on your work ethic. I admire your diligence. With so many social leeches today it's good to know some people wanna work. Best of luck to you.

Thanks everyone!

As far as the work ethic, I just can't fathom sitting at home collecting money that I didn't earn, knowing it will run out. Its' bad enough I have to live at my mother's house (and before my father's house). The least I can do is keep my end up.

Right on DB

Go to work to work and leave everything else at home, you'll do fine.

If you have week-ends off, go look for P/T work. Save that money up for six/nine months and you'll have means to possibly get your own place.

I know that feeling. My daughter is going to be here in less than a month and I couldn't be happier. Smile

I gotta tell y'all, I am so sore, there are men in their 80s moving easier than me Very Happy. Apart from my weak back and weak wrist, I also strained my right bicep on the first day (might have done worse). I was moving a large radiator (you don't realize how big industrial AC units are until you have to tear them down) with a dolly and it leaned to far and I had to get help to right it up (tell the truth I should have just let it fall). Immediately after it felt like my bicep went numb and I couldn't straighten my arm. This lasted about 15-20 minutes and I could move it. It's sore today but fully functional (wish I could say the same things about my thighs Very Happy).

Then today I scraped my arm on a radiator when using a team lift to get it on a stack. Pretty deep and painful (still bleeding after cleaning it several times). After doctoring my arm today and the constant soreness and hard time getting back into actual labor, one of my co-workers asked if I was going to quit. I told him not a chance, it's going to take more than that. Though I'm not lifting a radiator without more help again (or at least wearing arm protection).

Truth is, while this is much more physical labor than I have... well, ever had I will stay as long as they're willing to have me working there. Now after a year if I'm not seeing any upward movement, I will seek another job but I won't quit that easily let alone that quickly. Besides, I'm very sure that after a week, it will be lot easier.

Thanks for the words of support guys!

Back in my younger days, I worked at a Holly Farms poultry plant in Virginia basically providing racks to people who were working the shrink wrap lines packaging the chicken.† I'd grab racks off an overhead conveyor belt†coming out of the freezer and drop them in front of each shrink wrap machine station.† Then when the rack at each station was full of chicken I'd lift it off and load it on a thigh-high conveyor belt that went back to the freezer and grab a new empty rack from overhead.† I had to man 6 shrink wrap stations and if one rack was full and I wasn't there with a new empty one soon enough the person on the station would yell "RACK!!!!"† Eight hours of reach up, reach down, lift, repeat.

Real physical labor but that was the best shape I've ever been in in my life so look on the bright side DB, you won't need a gym membership.† Laughing

Before I actually had worked a day I was still thinking of taking my dad up on an offer for a gym membership (he was willing to pay for it). On my lunch break on the first day, I called him up and told him it wouldn't be necessary Very Happy.

Keep on DB, after you work through the initial soreness you'll be feeling tons better doing physical labor every day. I work in a hot ass warehouse every day stacking cases of liquor. It keeps me in shape. Smile

Well, false alarm everyone. I just got a call from the Employment agency saying the people at the job were dissatisfied with my work. Guess I just wasn't what they were looking for. It's back to the job hunt.

don\'t know

Sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you.

At this point I don't know what to say to you anymore DB.

Except that the next time you land a job where you're not tearing yourself up physically I'd suggest you do whatever you have to to hang on to it. Cut your hair, shave the beard, lose the headphones, keep your mouth shut...etc. Anything to keep it. Basically be a sheep. I know it's difficult but that's the way the world works for the most part.

You know, the more I think about it the more I think you should cut your hair and shave even if management doesn't specifically ask you to because anytime HR hears about a dispute between two employees they'll most likely side with A) whichever one has been there longer and B) whichever one doesn't look like trouble. And let's face it, corporate America and HR types specifically frown on long hair and beards.

PostSubject: Re: Finally Got A Job   Mon Apr 04, 2016 10:48 pm

I will definitely keep that in consideration and already plan on shaving my beard off and while not the hair, I will be getting a significant portion cut off. As for headphones, despite others at that job using them, I never let myself do it. I also avoided conversation that didn't have to do with the job. The main problem is that this job was not something I've ever done before. It as not a warehouse, it wasn't retail, it wasn't anything I have experience with. It was an industrial job and every other person working there had been doing that kind of work for years so I wasn't at the level of everyone else.

It required heavy lifting and know how of blowtorches and reciprocating saws. I have never used those tools before (the manager already had doubts about me because of that) and I'm not the strongest person and I've been sedentary for quite a while. I had a hard time lifting a lot of the stuff (didn't help that my co-workers got upset anytime I asked for help) and my body was aching which slowed me down a bit. I showed up on time (save one time I was two minutes late because the clock in my car was off which I fixed first thing on break), I made sure I wasn't caught standing around doing nothing (because I never did), and I put all my effort in it pushing past the pain I felt. And despite my lack of the tool experience I made every effort to learn (I was getting better with the saw but still had a problem with the blowtorch).

I really did suck it up and put all my effort into it but in the end they were looking for someone more experienced and better equipped for the job. Despite the hard work, the pain, the constant cuts, the heat, my difficulties, little room for moving up (getting out of the temp position is a chore in itself), the low pay, and the prospect of an A/C free summer, I never complained and was not going to give up. I was determined to make this job work at all costs. In the end I just wasn't what they wanted. TBH, I sort of suspected it after the first couple of days, but I wasn't about to let that stop me from giving my full effort into it. Of course this is why temp jobs exist. The agency takes care of everything so the employer can find someone through trial and error with minimal cost to them. Which is why I'm always weary of them. The company doesn't really want me, they just want someone to fill a void.

Getting my working legs back I won't go back to my previous state. Early nights and early mornings and once I'm up, keep myself occupied and physically active. Not doing those things was my biggest mistake and was a major factor I think that led me to this point. That way when I finally get another one, it won't be as hard to transition.

Good attitude DB!

Hang in there!

I speak from experience. †Before I applied for my current job I had a ponytail, beard and big, gaudy diamond earring. †Before I interviewed I was advised to lose all that so I did. †That was 21 years ago last month. †And even though my company has now loosened up their standards A LOT, I never would have made it this long if I didn't conform from the outset.
