John Hurt, the esteemed British actor known for his burry voice and weathered visage — one that was kept hidden for his most acclaimed role, that of the deformed John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man — has died, according to reports from several British newspapers. He was 77.

The two-time Oscar nominee’s six-decade career also included turns on the BBC’s Doctor Who and in A Man for All Seasons (1966), Midnight Express (1978) and three Harry Potter films.

I really love The Elephant Man, but I'm not sure I'm familiar with his work outside of that film. Still sad either way. RIP.

He was great in The Elephant Man and 1984. Al Jourgensen used snippets from 1984 in the song "Faith Collapsing". It's John Hurt's voice you hear saying "What's happening???"

RIP

Wow that sucks! He was a really great actor. He played in a ton of great movies, but one of my favorite scenes ever was when his chest exploded in Alien. That shit scared me first time I saw it. He was also really good in Frankenstein Unbound. Been in countless others, such a shame.

RIP

If any other actor would've done that Alien chestburster scene, it wouldn't have the same effect. Beyond that role, man there was so much he was great in as an everyman. RIP. RIP indeed.
