Legendary musician Chuck Berry has died, police confirm. He was 90.
The St. Charles County Police Department in Missouri confirmed on Facebook that they responded to a medical emergency on Saturday afternoon where they found an unresponsive man.
“St. Charles County police responded to a medical emergency on Buckner Road at approximately 12:40 p.m. today (Saturday, March 18),” the police department said in a statement. “Inside the home, first responders observed an unresponsive man and immediately administered lifesaving techniques. Unfortunately, the 90-year-old man could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at 1:26 p.m.
“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry.”
“The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement.”

That's a bummer. R.I.P. sir!

Whenever I hear Chuck Berry's name, I think of the montage of scenes in "Rock N Roll High School" where Riff Randall (P.J. Soles) camps out in front of the concert venue (for three days) waiting for Ramones tickets to go on sale. The entire segment is scored to Chuck's "School Days (Ring! Ring! Goes The Bell)."

I was the opposite. I thought he'd live forever. He kind of kept touring till the end as well. Plenty of times in Finland.

My only real contact to his music was through a best-of CD I borrowed from the public library a longer time. That, and radio, of course. But he was a true rock legend. Thank you, Chuck.

Rock's first guitar hero, who taught us the power of the mighty riff, who wrote his own songs, was a showman, and who was just cool as hell.

Its safe to say without him rock n roll would either not exist or it would be entirely different animal. Chuck Berry was the Genius to the music we all love.

Sad, but not really. He was 90 and performed well into his 80's, so I salute and celebrate what by all indications was a very active fruitful life. If only all of us could live that life.

R.I.P. Mr. Berry...

Chuck's cousin Marvin could not be reached for comment.

But seriously folks, a true legend is gone. Rock n Roll as we know it would not be the same without his immense talent and charisma.

My earliest memories of rock was a 45 of 'Johnny B. Good' from my dad's collection. And my own K-Tel compilation album with 'My Ding-a-Ling' on it. My mom hated that song. "I don't want you singing that. It sounds fresh".

Chuck had been working on a new album, his first of new material in 30 years or so. I suppose it will come out later this year.

Godspeed, Mr. Berry. Duck walk through the Pearly Gates for us.

Lemmy and Chuck Berry.

Lem once described Motorhead's music as "Chuck Berry on Steroids."

He was actually working on a new album and it should be released sometime this year. The working title was "90". Appropriate.

The local news (since Chuck is from here) is saying Chuck's family is totally going to follow through with Chuck's plans for the new album.

I know I read a few month's ago that he was working on it for a spring release, so it must've been near completion already before his passing. It's his first album since 1979. Wikipedia has this to say...

I remember back in college when my friend Harry was introducing me to early punk rock (ie The Ramones and New York Dolls), I commented that it sounded like Chuck Berry, just played faster.

"Chuck" track listing:

01. Wonderful Woman
02. Big Boys
03. You Go To My Head
04. 3/4 Time (Enchiladas)
05. Darlin'
06. Lady B. Goode
07. She Still Loves You
08. Jamaica Moon
09. Dutchman
10. Eyes Of Man

Dualtone Records (an Entertainment One Company) has set a June 16 release date for "Chuck", the final album and first new recordings in nearly four decades by founding rock and roll legend Chuck Berry (pictured), who passed away last week at the age of 90.

Comprised of ten new recordings, eight of which were written by Berry, "Chuck" is his first new album since 1979's "Rock It". It was recorded and produced by Berry in various studios around St. Louis and features his longtime hometown backing group — including his children Charles Berry Jr. (guitar) and Ingrid Berry (vocals, harmonica), plus Jimmy Marsala (Berry's bassist for forty years), Robert Lohr (piano) and Keith Robinson (drums) — which supported him for nearly two decades on over two hundred residency shows at the famed Blueberry Hill club. The album also includes guest performances from Gary Clark Jr., Tom Morello, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Chuck's grandson Charles Berry III. Acclaimed author and historian Douglas Brinkley contributes liner notes.

Both Morello and Rateliff appear on album track "Big Boys", which Brinkley calls "a guitar player's national anthem" in his notes.

What about his cousin Marvin?

(I know you did that joke already earlier in this thread, MG, but I couldn't resist...)

Poor Marvin never gets any recognition. Talented as he may have been, he never recovered from the hand injury that kept him from rising above playing high school dances for dorky white kids.

From The Onion Archives...

Chuck Berry Remembers Call From Cousin About White Kid Playing 'Johnny B. Goode'

WENTZVILLE, MO—In a shocking revelation that turns a half century of rock-and-roll history on its head, legendary musician Chuck Berry recalled Monday how he got the idea for his iconic song "Johnny B. Goode"—believed for decades to have been written by Berry himself—after listening to a white teenager playing it over the telephone. "I'll never forget that night back in 1955 when I got the call from [cousin] Marvin [Berry] saying, 'Chuck, this is that sound you've been looking for!'" recounted Berry, explaining that his cousin was playing an "Enchantment Under The Sea"–themed high school dance when the mysterious teen, Calvin Klein, took to the stage and single-handedly invented rock and roll as we now know it. "Marvin held up the phone and I heard the song that would make me famous. Then I stole it."
