| Yes, it's me digging up more old threads....
I listened to Voivod briefly during the Dimension Hatross/Nothingface era but it wasn't particularly my cup of tea at the time.
But years later after I started listening to King Crimson (and a bunch of jazz) I kept hearing riffs in Crimson that reminded me of Voivod. So I went back and picked up some of their mid-period albums...and lo and behold it was very obvious to me that Crimson was definitely an influence on these guys. (they did a cover version of 20th Century Schizoid Man on Negatron). I could also hear the various fusion players that must have influenced Piggy's guitar style. Piggy used jazz riffs and progressions probably more than any other "metal" guitarist that I'm aware of. Anyway, hearing them with more mature ears helped me really appreciate what they were doing.
My favorite Voivod albums range from Dimension Hatross to The Outer Limits, but I also like the early thrash period albums and alot of the later material as well.
If I had to pick "one" Voivod album it would be Angel Rat. _________________ |

| I didnot get into Voi Vod during their middle period " Angel Rat" " The Outer Limits" and " Nothingface", all great albums. Unit detuned mentioned the Robert Fripp influence I never caught myself, but I can hear whta detuned is saying after going back and listening to the Outer Limits", Piggy had a real unorthodox approach to his guitar playing and was really going against the grain what his contempories where doing at the time, and his tone on "Angel Rat" is similar to what Robert Fripp's tone was on the "RED" album. Voi Vod walked their own path alot more of prog band than the thrash band that started out as. |

| Does anybody remember who VoiVod's opening acts were on the NOTHINGFACE U.S. tour in 89-90?
Faith No More and Soundgarden. How cool is that??
If that tour had happened a year later, the running order would've definitely been reversed. _________________ "Boys, set the terror level at code brown, 'cause I need to change my pants." -- President Hathaway, "Monsters vs. Aliens"

| That's a weird touring combination. At the time, Voivod (Nothingface) were on MCA records, FNM (The Real Thing) were on Sire/Reprise and Soundgarden (Louder Than Love) were on A&M. No common denominator. Hmmm... |

...Except that all three of them were weird, off the wall, and at the time, none of them were selling any records. VoiVod probably ended up headlining merely because they'd been around the longest of the three and had the biggest catalog. _________________ "Boys, set the terror level at code brown, 'cause I need to change my pants." -- President Hathaway, "Monsters vs. Aliens"

| I only have Katorz (it was only two bucks) but it has peeked my interest especially since I understand the older material is more thrash oriented. |

| I chose "The Outer Limits"...maybe not the obvious choice, but I just love that record.
My top 5 would be:
1. The Outer Limits 2. Angel Rat 3. Dimension Hatross 4. Nothingface 5. Killing Technology

I wish I still had the live tapes from when I seen it, yes, all three bands were great. Soundgarden sounded exactly like their albums from what I recall.
I remember being slightly disappointed that maybe only 2 old Voi Vod songs were played (first 2 LP's), if that. But Voi Vod were like a machine and just plowed through with so much energy, I have never heard one complaint.
Picked War and Pain. If Rrröööaaarrr had the same production, then it would have got my vote as I do like the songs a bit more. |

| Voivod is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I can honestly say I like every record. Dimension Hatross still remains my favorite though. |

| Angel Rat was kinda my introduction to the band, so that one has some sentimental value to me. However, since that one wasn't listed, I voted for Dimension Hatross. | Quote: | That's a weird touring combination. I saw Soundgarden open up for Guns n' Roses back in the early 90's and hated them. Early Soundgarden and GnR were not a good match-up. Demin, leather and cowboy boots didn't mesh with flannel, cut-off cargo pants and combat boots. _________________ A legend in posting since February 1st, 2007
