Seriously, REM has one song that I still like and that's Radio Free Europe.

I love that song!

I have three R.E.M. CDs that I've pulled from thrift stores over the past year or two- Green, Out of Time and Eponymous. Of the three, I listen to Eponymous the most cuz that's the one with "Radio Free Europe" on it. I think they're pretty much all the R.E.M. I'll ever need.

Dude, if you enjoy any R.E.M., Automatic for the People should be in your collection.

On a side note, I think that's the only reason I like The Primitons.† The Vanderbilt radio station used to play Radio Free Europe all the time and would always follow it up with a Primitons song.† It was real obvious that The Primitons were trying to capitalize on that same REM sound but unfortunately for them it didn't work.†

But I still like The Primitons; they were sort of mining the same territory as early REM:

And that second one is the album cover for their only vinyl release (as far as I know - and naturally I have it).† I was pleasantly surprised when I found and bought that CD comp of the Primitons that's pictured in the first video.

80s alternative music was really iffy for me; I could post a whole thread about bands I love from that period but I could also post a whole thread of bands I hate from the same time period.

Worst song on the album, though it is a good song. Just played the F*ck out.

I love R.E.M., but like Nirvana, sometime during the 90's I got sick of both bands due to excessive radio and MTV play, but since I have not listened to radio for eons, those songs and albums sound very fresh to me.

I'm the same way except†bands like that are the main reason I haven't listened to radio in eons.† Laughing

But now you have me curious; might I feel differently if I listened to either band now?† With REM I'm pretty sure I'd come to the same conclusion of "No, Stipe's voice is as annoying as his lyrics" but I wonder if I'd feel differently about Nirvana.

That's hard tell with both bands, because so many bands that followed them, attempted to copy them. I love Nirvana, but that quiet/loud/quiet style was pioneered by the Pixies, but the Pixies were just a bit to quirky for the mainstream.

By the time R.E.M. hit the big time with 'Orange Crush', that indie sound you loved on 'Radio Free Euphoria' had already been abandoned and co-oped by a 1000 indie/college bands.

Hard to say because we have heard everything that followed it, but I think you would feel the same way, simply because you were there during the birth of the whole alternative rock scene.

Possibly, if you start with Bleach and Incesticide first.

I'll have to give it a shot.† I never really "hated" Nirvana like I grew to hate REM but radio sure as hell made me sick to death of them.

I hear you. I haven't listened to Nevermind in ages for the same reason, though it's pretty much a perfect album from start to finish.

All this talk about REM has got me thinking about all the "alternative" bands from the 80s and 90s that I still love.† And it's a looooong list.† I'd start a thread about it in the "Music Talking" thread but I fear it would die a horrible, withering death.

But I still listen to so many bands from that era.

Same here. Despite my love of 80s rock/metal, the 90s is my favorite decade of music.

Start the thread. =)

So here's a partial list:

The Del Lords
Guadalcanal Diary
Julian Cope
Del Fuegos
Hoodoo Gurus
The Long Ryders
Jason and the Scorchers
Swimming Pool Qs
Drivin' 'n' Cryin'
Webb Wilder
Primitons
Bill Lloyd
The Questionnaires
The Replacements
Lords Of The New Church
Flesh For Lulu
Gene Loves Jezebel
Soup Dragons
Rank N File

and that's just off the top of my head.† There are probably a dozen more I'm forgetting.

I need to post all the CDs I've gotten this year so far, I just haven't gotten around to it. However, this one is one I was most happy to find:

Linear notes from Jon for all the music videos and an introduction to the CD.

That's a very different list from what I'd have. Mine would look more like this:

Nudeswirl
Pushmonkey
Green Apple Quick Step
Scruffy the Cat
Lucy's Fur Coat
Therapy?
Mutha's Day Out
Luscious Jackson
Kerbdog
Flowerhead
Belly
Earth Eighteen
Letters to Cleo
Big Head Todd and the Monsters
L7
Jimmie's Chicken Shack
Sugartooth
Ednaswap
Ween
Salt
I Mother Earth
Greta

I could probably add five dozen more. Haha.

And it looks like our idea of alternative is a bit different from each other.

I have about half of the albums on your list.† I think my list is more 80s†oriented; yours is more 90s.

I have at least one album by:

Pushmonkey
Lucy's Fur Coat
Mutha's Day Out
Kerbdog
Jimmie's Chicken Shack
Sugartooth
I Mother Earth
Greta

Most of those I bought since I lived in Missouri so I know they're from the 90s.

Most of the stuff I posted were bands I heard while listening to the Vanderbilt radio station while I was doing data entry on the graveyard shift from around 1984 - 1987.† You know, when you were†about 10.†† Laughing

Yeah, they're definitely 90s stuff. Actually, Scruffy the Cat was 80s. You ever hear them? Based on your list, you might like them.
