PostSubject: Manowar - Gods Of War   Sat Feb 24, 2007 6:10 pm

just downloaded this peice of rubbish this morning & i'll definetly be saving my money. it's a shame too, because i like Erics vocals so much. however this doesn't even sound like metal to me, but rather watery hard rock, all bloated up with lengthly pompous orchestral arrangments, silly spoken word narratives, & the typical Manowar cheese lyrics. it's even a weaker effort than Warriors Of The World, in that you feel you have to "wait" for the metal parts to break in. you spend most of your time waiting.

has anyone else had a chance to listen to this waste of an hour? i found myself picking at scabs to avoid falling asleep throughout. kings of metal my arse.

I liked half of Warriors album maybe even more than anything else
Manowar ever did before (save for Battle Hymns and Hail and Kill). The
other half was just horrible. New album never gets so bad anyway, but
its best moments are just the most average stuff out there. It's hard
to say anyway, since 3/4 of it is in "The Warrior's Prayer" vein, and
you hardly get a chance to listen to a real song on this album. It's
not horrible, but I'd still say that this is their worst album. At
least Adams still has it, but even he doesn't sound the same anymore.

The "bonus track" is probably the worst they ever did!

Do you remember that "no synth ..." statement in Kings of Metal
booklet? Well, there are more synths in this album than guitars!
(almost) Well, if ya like Rhapsody ...

Thanks for the little review. I dont understand why they dont just write normal songs without all those orquestral sounds. They always have been epic but they knew how to write catchy songs and it looks that today they just lost it. Very sad.

I agree 100% A total piece of trash. It's a shame too, because Manowar used to be one of my favorite bands, but they have been getting worse with every album.

That bad huh? I had a feeling... I haven't heard the album yet but I wasn't impressed with the stuff on the SONS OF ODIN e.p. at all... too much overblown symphonic crap and not enough heavy stuff, IMHO. I know they're good buddies with the guys from Rhapsody and everything, but I don't want Manowar to start sounding like them, and sadly, it seems like that's exactly what is happening!! Sad

Wow, I am in the VAST minority, I guess, as I didn't dislike it at all. Not my fave by the by ANY means, but I liked it for what it was, I guess.

Listened to it and didn't like it ,most of the track is story telling. I seemed to me like there were only two songs and then the rest of the songs becamse some kind of epic story. Very boring, not even the bonus track was worth it Sad

I got the album yesterday and I was disappointed. For me it is overloaded, much too many orchestral parts. The Intro is much to long it takes nearly 10 minutes until the first truly song starts. And then between nearly every song an interlude with spoken words or orchestral music – just boring! Why did they put out the Sons of Odin EP, when all titles are again on Gods of War? The new songs aren’t bad, they sound good. But there is too much of the boring stuff. I liked Manowar very much in the 80s, but this is a waste of money!

Now, you probably didn't give it more than 1 spin, right? Smile

King of Kings - a nice speed-up song, no need for the speach in the middle - 6/10

Sleipnir - I could have lived without the speaking at the beginning.
The rest is very good and very catchy - best song on Gods of War! - 8/10

Loki God of Fire - now is he related to our Locky over here? Actually
quite good song, too bad for the modern guitar sound! - 6/10

Blood Brothers - Good ballad, I'd put it next to Courage - 7/10

Sons of Odin - a solid song, screw the orchestration / synths - 6/10

Gods of War - the worst song of songs on the conceptual album, just far from the Manowar sound. Rhapsody? Too long - 4/10

Odin - solid epic song - 5/10

Hymn of the Immortal Warriors - nice epic song, sorta reminds me on stuff like Crown and the Ring - 6/10

Die for Metal - just completely fuc*ing terrible - Manowar's worst song ever? 1/10

"'I walked inside so I could hear and the guy beside me gave me a beer"

The rest (7 songs!!!) is just a bunch of throwaway intros, overtures,
intros of intros, and weird orchestral stuff. The production is too
soft, I miss the bass, too much of orchestral things everywhere! At
least Adams still does it well!

By the way, did you know that Eric Adams died in 1999? Smile

I just heard GODS OF WAR for the first time this morning... and sadly, I am in agreement with most of the other posts here, it is quite lame. Only three or four good tracks (two of which are repeats from the SONS OF ODIN E.P. anyway) surrounded by tons of orchestral pieces, symphonic noodling, seemingly endless narration, sound effects and other nonsense. Booooo-ring. My advice is "delete, ignore, destroy"

I just received the special edition of Gods of War. The packaging is
very cool. The leather digi is wrapped in a metal box with the Manowar
logo embossed in it.

Unfortunately what most people are saying about the music is quite
true. They focus WAY to much on the story. Too much narration and
orchestral stuff, not enough heavy metal. Was five minutes into the CD
before I even heard any heavy guitar distortion. The Kings of Metal are
the kings no more.

PostSubject: Re: Manowar - Gods Of War   Fri Apr 06, 2007 2:03 am

Here's another review:

Quote:
It's been 5 years since a full length studio album from Manowar
has seen the light of day and the wait for that album was like 6 years.
Productive is not the first word to spring to mind when thinking of
Manowar. Actually the first words to come to my mind are 'cheese' and
'loincloths' and I'm sure it's the same for many of you. Love them or
hate them though Manowar has made a considerable mark on the scene with
their brand of 'true' warrior metal.

It's time (if not long past time) to start questioning Manowar's
relevance in the here and the now however. With 2 albums put out in the
last decade and the last with mixed reviews a lot is riding on this
release. Manowar fans have been waiting a long time for a straight up
slab of Manowar warrior cliches with solid traditional music and I'm
afraid I'm going to have to tell you to keep waiting. What we have here
is the most pompous, over the top and completely unncessary load of
fluff I've ever heard.

To even call this a metal album seems a stretch at times considering 7
tracks of this album do not contain metal music. What we have here is 9
metal tracks packed between so much classical interludes and spoken
word tracks that I just wanted to shut this smurfer off and forget it
ever existed. I actually had to scream 'Get to the f****** song!' at my
computer to vent my frustration listening to this one. The only reason
I made it past track 4 was that I felt the need to write this damned
review. Track 1 is a 6 minute classical intro and track 2 is a
classical interlude with some spoken word... an intro into an
interlude... are you f****** kidding me? Then it gos into one song
before you get ANOTHER f****** INTERLUDE and the album more or less gos
on like this.

To top it all off, the payout for sitting through this pompous nonsense
isn't even that good. The first few ACTUAL songs have a pretty decent
upbeat rocking Manowar approach, even if they're absolutely nothing
new, but the songs lose steam as you get deeper into the album. Each
metal track seems more ponderous and slow than the last and geared
toward sounding majestic and epic. To me though they just succeed at
sounding really boring. Oh and some of the songs have INTROS and OUTROS
within them. MORE FLUFF... yay! If the songs were at least worth
listening to and made for some 'hits' I could at least call this album
tragically flawed. As is, it's a brutally boring and filler ridden
album with zero redeeming features.

Just in case you haven't gotten the jist of this review yet... this
album blows. Actually that's an insult to women working corners
everywhere. Manowar seems to think they can make up for a lack of metal
songwriting ideas with loads of orchestration and conceptual lyrics
about Norse gods. Think again Manowar... think again.

Highlights: King Of Kings and Loki God Of Fire are passable, but not great.
