I can't remember the year, but it seems like it's been more than 10 years, but maybe not. Kerrang had Kurt Cobain in it's top 5 guitarists of all time...it might've even have been top 3. I've always thought Kerrang was one of the most reputable mags out there, but I was dumbfounded when I saw how high they had him. I can't remember who exactly was ahead of him, but there were a whole lot of guys behind him that he would never be able to carry their guitar bags!!!

I didn't mind Nirvana, but Kurt lived off of distortion. He was an interesting lyricist, and he could right some stuff with some cool power chords, but not only he as a guitarist, but also his band, were totally overrated. But, when someone dies early in life (after having made a significant impact in the music world), they're all of a sudden "Lennonesque".

They were average at best. I do have Nevermind, but I haven't played it in probably 15 years.

Kurt had that knack of writing a catchy guitar line or riff that hooked you and millions of others.

That goes back to my statement that he may have been (depending on one's opinion) a great song writer. Writing and playing are not always compatible. You could have someone with basic guitar skills write a good riff. I will not get into any debates with you on Kurt's legacy (I remember what happened last time I did) because it stands on it's own. However, I will never think of Cobain as a great guitarist and there is no argument you can make that will change that, sorry.

Fair enough with where you stand.

...But i think when thinking about how good a guitarist is, i think writing music on the guitar is one aspect to look at when rating a guitarist. In fact it's probably the most important skill to have, it's all about the song. Whether someone is technical is not important, if so then we would have horrible block headed shredders topping the list like Yngwie, Impelliteri etc. Which is wrong imo.

I've always been of the opinion that Stevie Ray Vaughn is overrated. Not that he isn't a great guitarist, but I don't see him as the innovative, be-all-and-end-all guitarist some people seem to praise him as. I hear people say he plays Hendrix better than Hendrix. Frankly, I think this just isn't true. A good guitarist, no doubt, but still overrated IMO.

i agree, but i also think Hendrix was overrated. when i first heard him play the star spangled banner, i almost puked. drugs made playing strange seem innovative i guess.

Jimi Hendrix is not over rated, he changed the way guitar playing is approached and was talented and creative songwriter. 38 years after his death we are still looking at his music and discovering new ascepts of his songwriting and craft.

"Star Spangle Banner" is a classic performance that embodied his generation anger in sound rather than words.

In three short years that his career lasted he changed rock music forever, as Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Ritchie Blackmore,Eric Clapton and countless others have continued to praise him and have been inspired by him.

Being a guitar player that influences and being a good guitar player are 2 different things. Kurt Cobain could play your basic 6 chords and write a melody around them. Why he is on those guitar lists is because of what he did to the music world and how he changed it with the album NEvermind. IMO he stinks on guitar.

2 others i find very overrated are John Frusicante who is considered by many the best guitarist of this ERA. I laugh at this statement everytime i hear it. Being a good guitar player is one thing but considering all those out there Froosh doesn't make the top 100 imo.

The other and i will get slammed for this is Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix wrote some beautful music but his playing is extremely sloppy and was so influential because he was pretty much the only one at the time playing that style. That makes him more of an innovator not a great guitar player. He has wrote some great licks and his guitar playing is wonderful at time, but very non technical. He is phenomenal in some areas on the guitar yet very overrated.

When i look for a great guitar player i look for someone who plays fluidly and with ease, and who has the technical prowless to keep me listening. I want someone who makes my jaw drop yet doesn't focus on 200 bpm solos.

I disagree that Jimi Hendrix could at times be sloppy but listen to him play on " Band of Gypsys" " Live at Winterland" "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" he isn't playing sloppy on any of those live performances, the man is on fire. He is playing with emotion, passion and grace, which is the essence of great guitartist so what if he hit a bum note here or there. Hendrix could be techincal and would have to be to create the guitar orchestrian he did on " Electric Ladyland " sessions but he choose to focous on feeling than technic.

I think Jimi Hendrix gets a bad rap for being sloppy player due to " Woodstock " film, the band was under rehearshed and then went on stage in some godly hour, but despite all thoses issues it was still a brillant performance IMO.

I look at him as being sloppy not in his live playing really but in his approach to the guitar. We as guitarists are going to hit wrong notes we're all human and it's going to happen. I look at his playing very closely and when i say sloppy i am talking about the way he strays from what he recorded and goes off somewhere else. Jimi was more of an improviser when he played live and that's not a bad thing i just don't think he had the technical chops to do it. He's brilliant don't get me wrong and some of the songs he wrote are mind blowing but in other areas i think he could've improved greatly.

If Jimi were alive today i believe he would be one of the best as he had so much more to learn.

Fair enough Metal Rob, I think that improvisation is a risk and sometimes you land on your feet and other times well it may turn out to be so great. Jimi Hendrix of course depended on his excellent rhythm section that allowed him that freedom to soar or fall back to earth. Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding and Billy Cox all gave Jimi incredible support, his bandmates are rarely mentioned but their were key to his success as both a live performer and a songwriter.

But he was in the forefront at the time. You are looking in hindsight. Jimi, while he was "playing sloppy", was creating things that later guitarists perfected and called technique. Saying Jimi was sloppy and had so much more to learn is like saying Abraham Lincoln could have learned something from Ronald Reagan about being President.

Jimi played with FEEL, he wasn't a super "technically proficient" guitar player, but he was awesome!!!!!!! Both types of guitar players (technical players and feel players) are both great!

And, Kurt is only overrateed on those "vote for best guitarist" list.

Tough choice on that list. I never thought of Kurt Cobain as being an overrated guitarist. Nirvana is an overrated band, IMO.
