What????

I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan in the world, but Eddie really did help to revolutionize hard rock and heavy metal guitar playing in the 1970's. Before that, guys like Clapton, Beck, Page, Frehley, etc. were the standards. After Eddie, all these guitarists started using the tap on method in solos and such.

I went with Kurt Cobain. I am not a fan of Nirvana whatsoever, but that is not the reason I voted for Kurt. I think Cobain is known more for his songwriting than his guitar playing. He was not a seasoned player. However, he did revolutionize rock and roll in the 1990's. It was his songwriting that did that though, not his guitar playing.

Eddie lists one of his main influences as Alan Holdsworth (fusion guitarist). Some of the fusion guitarists like Holdsworth and John McLaughlin helped bridge the technical gap between what Clapton/Page was doing and what Eddie would do in 1978. Take a listen to the album Believe It by Tony Williams Lifetime, the stuff Holdsworth plays on that record is very similar to what Eddie would be doing 3 years later.

I dont think Cobain is overrated as he shouldn't even be rated. As far as Slash the man has come up with some really great solos i.e Sweet Child O' Mine, November Rain, Knocking on Heavens Door, Slither, She Builds Quick Machines, Civil War, and some others. Not the most technical guy but he def makes a solo stick and thats a great trait to have.

Right. I'm familiar with Holdsworth. He was a big influence on many. However, it wasn't Alan that left jaws on the floor in 1978, it was Eddie. After Van Halen 's debut, heavy metal had changed forever.

Not to mention using the tremolo bar too. Before Eddie only Beck and Hendrix were incorporating it to the hard rock sound.

Blackmore and David Gilmour were both masters at using the tremolo bar in their solos.

I voted for Kerry King. When you play thrash you're supposed to be good, right? Kerry plays the most jumbled, noisy, crappy solos I've heard ever in metal (except for the people trying to copy him, of course sick).

I had to go with Kerry King, for one he's in Slayer. And all that I've really heard from him is fast fast fast. So what?

for me the rly overated guitarists are the overly technical players guys like Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Freidman, Alexi Lahio, those guys from dragonforce.

I HATE!!! techincal shreddy type playing bores me to death, no feeling or style most of the time just the same ol scales to a lesser extent, and I'll fight this debate for ever, no amount of speedy, fluid playing can ever! touch the power of one single balls-out riff played with feeling and passion and personal style

In many cases technical type players are thinkin "Inside the box"

wereas someone like Hendrix was an innovater and thinkin "outside the box"

but thats all personal prefrence and opinion guitar is an art-form and art is all about expressing yourself and if you want to express yourself by playing like malm or whoever than all the power to ya, just don't expect me to think your a good guitar player.

I agree with all but Friedman. Most shred guys stick to the boring scales and arpeggios, but Marty does this really cool exotic sounding thing in addition to your basic sweeps and stuff. Yeah, it's technical shredding, but it's something different.

I agree with a lot of what you just said. I like a lot of shredders but I much prefer a solo that draws me back and sticks in my head. One thing that shredders do to to me is motivate me to get better at guitar.

I agree that technical playing is highly overrated, except in the case of John Petrucci. He's one of the few who can combine technical playing with feeling IMO.

Jeff Loomis, Nils Norberg, and Paul Gilbert are some incredible musicans who can shred with the best of them but also play with so much feel for the guitar.

Technical playing is something I look for as I said before it motivates me to practice more. I can see where people think its overrated but it also adds a flavor and a wow effect for me. I am a guitar player who much rather play a solo like Tremonti, Gilmour, and Slash but also add some Petrucci and some shred in there.
