I think I'm more shocked about how complimentary you've been towards the album. Getting a hankerin' for metal again? Smile

Yeah exactly.  Why?  It's not any better than dozens of other thrash albums released in the last decade.

Why does it have to be?

Well, we mainly talk about mainstream bands here so that limits the discussion quite a bit.

I have a tremendous metal collection and listen to a ton of obscure bands on YouTube.  It takes more to impress me probably than the average metal fan who just listens to releases from the few bigger metal labels.

Off the top of my head, I thought the new Nile sounded very promising and think they sound better than ever.

I thought the new Watchtower songs were amazing.

Wait! What!?! There are new Watchtower songs????

They've released 4 new original songs since 2010.

Oh, I was thinking that they dropped an Eps worth of tunes recently and I missed it! Smile

That is an EP's worth of tunes. Haha.

Yea, over a six year period. I meant all at once. You know, BAM! Here are four new tunes, enjoy. :-)

I've heard a few tracks and I like what I have heard. Then someone told me if you buy the CD at Target you also get a VINYL copy free! SO I went to my local Target, no dice. I ordered online and having it sent to my store.

Order here:

Megadeth on CD & vinyl for 13.99!

I am enjoying this release. I picked it up at Target. When I got in my truck I opened it up and there was no coupon for a free vinyl copy. I read thru all the liner notes assuming it might in the notes somewhere. I finally gave up and returned to the store and explained to them I only bought this for the vinyl copy... So I went to Electronics and got another and I opened it at the service desk. This one had the coupon so I left a happy listener. I put it in the CD player and listened on the way home and I really like Dystopia. Used the coupon or order the vinyl when I got home. Can't wait to hear it on record!

How does it sound? I read a review that it sounded better than the CD then I read another one where it used the same master so it sounded the same. Either way I am stoked to have it on vinyl for only $13.99!

I haven't listened to the record yet. I still need to give a spin. I'll probably record it onto my Reel to Reel, as well.

This is who I think should've been MEGADETH's lead guitarist:

Check out that solo!  Chops and style.

Really strong album that has more inspired riffs than the past several albums. But what is really noteworthy here is Mustaine neglecting pop formulas in his structure and more of the technical vibe of earlier albums. It's not great, but certainly an improvement, with better production.

I do feel it loses momentum in its second half.

I decided to "consciously uncouple" from the halftime show and listen to this lp. My copy sounds REAL clean, the vinyl is flat and the music sounds really damn good!

For those interested:
This is being played on a Dual 1219 with a Grado GF3/8mz cart/stylus combo that is loaded down through an Audio-Technica AT-PEQ3 phono preamp and an Pioneer QX-747 in stereo mode.

I'm having a hard time forming much of an opinion on this new album. I like it and it's growing on me more with every spin, but I feel like it's just as good as the last few Megadeth albums. I mean that in a positive way. Yea, I'm a fan and I've found something I like on EVERY Megadeth album (except Risk), and I think this one's no different.

Dave's got a style and sound and at this point, Megadeth albums sound like, well, Megadeth albums. You either like 'em or you don't. I'm not expecting any radical changes. Just an enjoyable album and Dystopia is just another in a long line of enjoyable albums as far as I'm concerned.

One difference, however, is the drumming. It's improved vastly with the addition of Chris Adler. That Drover guy was boring.

It def sounds like you have an opine. A good one. Smile I agree with all of what you said. It's Megadeth. It's what they sound like. There really isn't going to be much deviation with bands like them and AC/DC or Kiss.

Yes. Much more prominent.

Yea, I guess that IS an opinion after all, isn't it? Laughing

I guess I just don't get some comments I've read where someone says "This is the most aggressive/technical/melodic/commercial Megadeth has been since [any album after Risk]". Really? Every album since Risk has been aggressive, technical, melodic and/or commercial. Sure, some more than others, but it's still Megadeth. Dave steers the ship and he knows what he wants the end result to be.

I sorta felt the same way about the last WASP album. Folks were giving it rave reviews saying it's their best in years. They obviously haven't heard the last few WASP albums which were all cut from the same cloth. Blackie runs that show in a similiar fashion as Mustaine.

Not saying that's a bad thing really. But the MegaDave/Blackie personalities are shockingly similiar if you think about it.

Good point on the last few albums. And the personalities of both guys (and the paths they have both traveled to get where they are now) are strikingly similar. They are the supreme rulers of both of those bands and, at this point in their careers, are doing whatever they want and making the music they want to make.

As for the online comments of fans, I think a lot of people simply repeat what the guy at the record store said or their cousin, or coworker and don't really form their own opinion. There's also a ton of people in our age bracket that are stuck in '85-'93 and never refined their musical palate. They stopped listened after "Youthanasia" and that's their frame of reference. They can't speak to how events in one's personal life (divorce, addiction, religious conversion) comes through in the lyrics for an album. People are of course aware it happens but can't point to a specific example on a given album.

I'm going to see Megadeth in a few weeks and I'm going with a group of 5 guys. A coupla of them have asked me "So how's the new album?" My reply has been "Well, it sounds like Megadeth of the last 15 years or so."

If you haven't heard anything past RIP, then yea, you might be disappointed.

I guess Dave and Blackie feel if it ain't broke don't fix it and stay and the same tried and true mold. I've enjoyed both the of the last few recent Megadeth and W.A.S.P. albums so I have no qualms about them.

Yeah, the last few Deth albums have been pretty darn good for a band on their 15th studio album. Golgotha is also very good, but, truth be told, I prefer Dominator and Babylon. But that's just me splitting hairs. Smile

I know that people rag on a lot of "European Power Metal" for being to samey sounding. And it is certainly true in some cases. But, if a band changes their sound too much then they change style and soon you are no longer part of the Genre you started out in. For some that is okay as they may not care what a stylistic shift brings; but others are very conscious of the mold they came from.

I still think the upgrade at the drum and guitar chairs and a decent production/mix put this one above the other recent Megadeth albums.

I do think the album basically runs out of gas halfway thru the second side, but prior to that it's a fun ride.

Agree on both points.

I'll still take Repentless over both this and the new Anthrax though.

Upgrade on drums, sure.

Guitars? I don't hear that at all.  I think his soloing is even less inspired and that's saying something.

I really don't understand how you can be surprised when people have an opinion that is different than yours. That's how opinions work.

I really don't understand why someone who believes all opinions are equally worthless wastes so much time stating and discussing opinions on the internet.
