Same here. I have all the STP discs, but no Pearl Jam. That dude bothers me too much and I can't get past it enough to listen to the music. I've heard Ten (my wife has a copy) and it's not bad, but I just don't like Eddie Vedder.

| I have had "Core" through "Tiny Music" in the past and traded them off. STP has had a handful of good songs, IMO, but I can listen to the entire PJ discography and truly enjoy it. |

STP are still a great band. The truth is when Pearl Jam, STP, Nirvana, and Soundgarden came on the scene I found them refreshing. At the time, metal was cluttered with alot of crappy hair bands. Sure, there was good metal.. always has been...but I never stopped listening to the good stuff. There was alot of clutter, though. Compared to Poison or maybe Ugly Kid Joe, I also found Pearl Jam to be pretty cool back then. For a musician, though, even Alice In Chains could not hold a candle to the guitar vitrtuoso triumvirate of early 90's hair metal: Extreme, Mr. Big, and Winger. No grunge band ever showcased a guitar master like Nuno Bettencourt, Paul Gilbert, or Reb Beach. Hair metal was getting really good with these three bands, and all three had put out awesome debut albums in 1989. Mr. Big's Lean Into It, which came out in 1991, was hair metal with virtuosic musicianship as well as catchy melodies and lyrics. Compared to Lean Into It or Extreme's second album, Pornograffiti, Pearl Jam came off as this musically mediocre band with interesting lyrics and catchy choruses. They came off as different, though, and that is what made them cool. |
I like Extreme and Mr Big is ok, but what made Pearl Jam interesting was the music, they were not and are not a mediocre band, not every band needs to have a 12 bar guitar solo, they have not held on their success for all these years due to mediocre musicianship.
Unlike Winger or Mr Big I have liked every release that Pearl Jam have released, great lyrics, great musicianship and I think Stone Gossard is a great guitartist, and I am not the only one. |
Sounds like you see Pearl Jam the way I see Winger, and Winger that way I see Pearl Jam. With Winger, I have all three of their early albums, the self-titled debut album from '89, In the Heart Of The Young from '91 and Pull from '93, as well as their live album from a year or two ago which has some songs from their latest album. I can listen to all of these albums all the way through and enjoy every last song. With Pearl Jam, I do own Ten, and I always enjoy hearing "Jeremy Spoken" and "Even Flow" on the radio. Jeremy Spoken always brings back a great college memory from Fall of 1993. My roommate was a major Pearl Jam and STP fan, and he had Jeremy Spoken playing on his answering machine while he was saying the "you have reached" bit. My Mom's reaction? "Your roommate has a guy singing, I hear, that reminds me a little of Bruce Springsteen. Who is that?" At the time, I was surprised that my Mother actually knew who Springsteen was  He seemed a little to modern for old Mom and Dad, who seemed stuck in the late fifties/early sixties. Even so, a heck of compliment for Eddie Vedder!! |

STP gets a little weird for me around the 4th album but Pearl Jam was weird from the get go. With Vedder and his "oh so angst-ridden vocals". After the first two PJ albums I was totally bored with the band.
If I tried to compile a Best Of of both bands, I could fill out a CD with STP but I'd have to flesh out a PJ Best Of with Soundgarden and Alice In Chains.

No. 4 may be my favorite from them, but I like all of their albums up to that point. It was Shangri-La-Dee-Da that was weird and disappointing. |

| I recently ripped all of my STP discs to the home computer, so I'm giving them all a fresh spin. I liked how they seemed to progress through all of their releases and found their own sound by the 3rd release and moved away from the "Pearl Jam" clone tag. Saw them live a few years ago and enjoyed 'em very much. Scott Weiland a real head-case, but I'm looking forward to their new release nonetheless.

| Ive heard the new song I like it (naturally) STP is right up there with the Foos I love STP!!!!
I think of their entire discography I do think their last album Shangri La Dee Dah was their weakest I still like it, but they were on the verge of collapse at that point. I cant wait for the new album
