Any fans of Lemmy's former space-rock band Hawkwind? I've been on a bit of a Hawkwind kick in the past few weeks.

Favorite albums? Recommendations?

I would recommend 'Space Ritual' just listening to this album will give you a contact buzz:

Trog Bait! Ha!

Actually, I miss having 'ol Trog around these parts. Sad

Space Ritual is awesome! It's probably my favorite thus far. I have 5 or so HW albums I need to add to NLTM.

I am only familiar with a few Hawkwind albums, I guess their were U.K.'s answer to the Grateful Dead.

I didn't see Hawkwind on your site Ult, so I don't know what you have but I like:

1970 Hawkwind
1971 In Search of Space
1972 Doremi Fasol Latido
1974 Hall of the Mountain Grill
1975 Warrior on the Edge of Time
1981
Sonic Attack

those are the only ones I have

Warrior on the Edge of Time is great too. I have that one. I really want Doremi Fasol Latido as well.

I love love love HAWKWIND (pretty good name for a band considering it was inspired by a bandmember who would always "hawk" a loogie and break "wind" all the time! LOL). I consider them and ATOMIC ROOSTER to be two of my greatest 70's hardrock discoveries in the last 10 years!

1973 Space Ritual (live)
1974 Hall of the Mountain Grill
1975 Warrior on the Edge of Time

These two took the words right outta my mouth, these are the band's finest flowers. They did MANY albums afterwards which I have yet to explore, and they even have a new one out as of last year, but these listed here are the classic and defining albums for them, IMO. Lemmy played on all these except the first two. After Warrior, he left, and as we all know, the rest is histöry!

Oh, and I love all those listed, but my personal two favorites are In Search of Space and Doremi Fasol Latido - can't get enough of those two with their opening, light-year long, chanted, space-rock anthems!

Author Michael Moorcock, a longtime friend, fan and collaborator with the band (and the creator of the Elric/Stormbringer Saga) even wrote a sci-fi novel (The Time of the Hawklords) casting the band as the main characters and endowing them with superhuman abilities so they could save the world and all of mankind with their music! A great and fun read that only got me more into the band.

Yet another great idea that Gene Simmons was not the first to have! Razz

Yep, I have been saying the same thing since I got into them. Their followers are somewhat similar and the sheer numbers of their live catalogue rivals the Dead too!

Oh, and the fact that they employed a lovely, well endowed, painted and nude female interpretive dancer named Stacia at their gigs only makes them that much BETTER! cool

Thanks guys. I'm still slowly putting my life back together, but when I get to a point where I feel somewhat comfortable again and have a bit more room and free time, I'll probably come by more often. It's nice to be missed though!

Nah, early prog/space-rock if anything...and the majority of those you saw are most likely either comps or live ones.

Trog I seem to recall that they had changed their name to Hawklord for a few years or was this an entirely different band?

Nope, you're right. They did go by the name HAWKLORDS for a short time...not sure why. Perhaps it was based on the name of their group of superhuman characters in Michael Moorcock's book? They did produce one of the GAYEST looking album covers while using that name tho:

Interesting that Michael Moorcock was involved with Hawkwind, he wrote some lyrics for later day Blue Oyster Cult albums such as 'Veterans of the Psychic Wars' and 'Black Blade ' to name two songs.

That one is very folksy and acoustic compared to the spaced-out ones that followed it. Very good, melodic and mellow...a nice listen, IMO.

Yep, and the lyrics of both those songs you mentioned are based on his Elric character from his most well known series of sci-fi novels.

Elric also shows up in the lyrics of Diamond Head and Cirith Ungol - though neither band collaborated with Moorcock that I know of. Michael Whelan's Elric paintings graced all four album covers of Ungol's catalogue:

and one of Rodney Matthew's depictions of Elric was on DH's second album Borrowed Time:
