Depeche Mode- Black Celebration 9. Comsat Angels- Sleep No More 10. The Church- Heyday 11. Black- Wonderful Life 12. Siouxie & The Banshees- Tinderbox 13. Danse Society- Heaven is Waiting 14. Teardrop Explodes- Wilder 15. Ultravox- Systems of Romance 16. Magazine- Real Life 17. The The- Burning Blue Soul 18. The Sound- Heads & Hearts 19. That's the second time I've seen that Japan song listed.
I don't have any idea what that song is.

That's David Sylvan who you probably know about. He's one of those weird guys who have been all over the Art Rock map- like Bill Nelson, Peter Hamill, or David Thomas. "Quiet Life" was Japan's masterpiece. Dark synthetic, New Romantic pop.

Another band I love from that era is the Divinyls, they had a huge hit in the early 90's with 'I Touch Myself' but they deserved better than just one hit, plus the vocalist Christina was hot in badgirl sort of way, Toho when you get home tonight check out the video to "Pleasure and Pain' on you tube.
I remember I Touch Myself.
Man, reading through the bands and songs in this thread sure is a stroll down memory lane...
Toho have you got the Divinyls debut Desperate (1983)?...........the Angels meets the Pretenders!.........

Spec mentioned Berlin, anyone remember the song 'Sex (I'm...) a classic song that I used to love and of course the classic single 'No More Words'.
The Fixx had some great tunes 'Red Sky' 'Saved By Zero' and 'Stand or Fall' of course.

Does anybody here own the "Valley Girl" soundtrack? It is a nice little cross section of 80's New Wave. It is actually one of my favorite soundtracks. I remember that for a long time it was impossible to find, but Rhino released it again back around '94. It has some great Plimsouls tracks.

You are probably right... and I guess many of the bands we have discussed here technically do not fall under a strict definition of New Wave. Some folks call this retro or retro-alternative, or 80's alternative. But, even that is not right since many of these bands were quite mainstream. In any case, they all do seem to follow some common thread, though.

Yep. I have it. I was mad that Sparks' "Monster Of Love" wasn't on it though.

Yes! I had the same complaint when it came out! But, actually, Rhino released a second volume "Valley Girl: More Music from the Soundtrack" a couple of years later. That volume contains that song. Unfortunatley, that volume is now out of print, and goes for around 30 bucks used.

I got that album from Uncle Saxon as an after thought since it was cheap. What a great find it turned out to be. It is a shame that so many of those bands only got that one hit when their whole album was really good.

Two of my friends started a new cover band playing 80's new wave. They do not have keyboards and they Rock the songs out a bit more, they take out the wimp-ness. They go by the name of Philo Beddoe.
